I had a lot of fun reading readers submissions in the past like the series incountry by chiang mai kelly and princess.

But with all the ads on his site for escorts and bars and such the guy is just making money on the back of woman who come from a bad socio economic background and just like foreign bar owners is just an ordinary pimp.

So he can eff off for all i care and be a sheep farmer in NZ for all i care.

of course all the foreign visitors and expats only come here for the temples and lakorn right?

I've stumbled into an informational rabbit hole by opening this thread.

I take a keen interest in the value of ecommerce and blog sites.

Anecdotally Stickman has mentioned that business generally sell for 3 to 4 times earnings....seperately he mentioned in other articles that he would not let his site go for less than 12,000,000 (but he is dreaming at that price and that could include private eye income also).

I am convinced he is no longer the writer and so he has probably sold it (plenty of likely takers in Bangkok and as mentioned before I wouldn't be surprised if it was doing circa $6k to $7k per month on the advertising)....

At 12,000,000THB he would of been dreaming but lets say $7k per month for $84k per year x 3 = $252K....move back to NZ with a fully paid for house and no mortgage....I would say he has done very well for himself and not many people leave Thailand in such a good position.

The problem with Stickman's evaluation is that Stickman is the primary value of the site. It's just like any company where someone has a highly specialized skill and the value of that company is tied up in that person. There is no website without him, unless another talented, dedicated writer comes along living in Thailand who can replace him, but then they can just start their own site for nothing. In fact if Stickman does leave, people would be hungy for such a replacement and could attract Stick's following very quickly if they are that good. There is still some value in the name recognition of Stick's site but we are talking pennies on the dollar of what he is valuing it at.

If I were him I would manage it remotely from New Zealand with some assistance from someone in Thailand. But I don't think he is making nearly that kind of money, 6-7k range (I doubt his advertisers are paying anything more than a couple of hundred dollars a month each) to where it is worthwhile, or he is just really unhappy being in Thailand. It seems like with all of these expats who fell in love with the country and spend years there, there always comes a day when they are done with the place

after say 10-15 years you see beneath the surface the underbelly

Sticks finally listened to his own advice, which is that Thailand is a good place for a holiday or retirement and the western world is where to make your $$$... After 15+ years in Thailand, Stick isn't getting any younger and is most likely concerned about the later half of his life, trying to feather his nest before getting too long in the tooth... I know I wouldn't want to live in Thailand without an established, guaranteed income...

I've read Stick's site off and on for over a decade... I've enjoyed the reader submissions and some authors in particular which took the site beyond a mere mongers she-done-me-wrong outlet... I agree with others that the site and Stick's demeanor changed after the John Galt BS... I guess I would be too if I had a stalker of the likes of Galt... Recent times have shown a decline in quality / quantity of reader submissions and the weekly naught-nightlife report is a bit redundant, much like the nightlife areas he covers being in decline...

I wish him well moving forward, where ever that may be...

Needs to feather his nest? Do you have an idea of what he earns through his stickman website- google ads, site specific adverts from locals bars, businesses- as someone has already pointed out- using websites available to check these things he is making around 150-200US$per day- several thousand $ per month- very very unlikely he can pick up anything in new zealand that will bring this money. I suspect its a combo of a) boredom with the scene here thinking about kids and wants to raise them in New Zealand (decent school fees in Bkk here are pretty much unmanageable without an expat package)c) he is tired/worried about all the internet stalkers/weirdos who harass anyone with a profile on line.

Brick layers make more than USD 150-200 / day in NZ, it's not a lot of money and plenty of opportunities in AUS and NZ to make considerably more than that.

I also have lived here many years, and trust me I have zero moral outrage (I've already booked my place in Hell). I just found his site nothing but self serving trash, bit like reading a supermarket tabloid, but with more hookers!

Titivating for one copy, but highly tedious after that.

But thats just my opinion, and after all an opinion is just that, one man's view

Hi. I've also been residing here for 16. First visited 34 yrs ago. I would leave also if it was feasible, but I still have properties in Chiang Rai to tend to. Same like you, there are things I like and other things I don't like. Most of the things I don't like (tossing trash, abandoning dogs, loud noise, etc) could be fixed for low cost or free - but it takes a willingness by Thais to change toward improving things. He appeals to the 2 week millionaire crowd and the haggard sexpats who frequent the bars on soi nana 24 hours a day. there are many of us that don't conform to the Stickman world of mongers, bars and bar girls. There actually is a real (normal) life outside of the sexpat world here

A very large part of the site you have not mentioned. I assume because you haven't read it. You're just parroting a view that you think is hip on Thai Visa. The main body of his work is in the reader submissions. I think his most prolific writer is a fellow named Dana. I never read his weekly column because I didn't like his anti sex tourist attitude. I would question your comprehension skills. I never said anything was a work or poetry or some kind of social agony aunt self confessionals. I said the main contributor was a guy named Dana who wrote comedy and satire about Thailand and I didn't like Stick's weekly column because it was anti sex tourist.

He was OK to begin with but when his wife stopped writing and I assume left him he turned anti sex.

It seems to me we are talking about two different web sites or one of us hasn't read StickmanBangkok,com

Stickman . . . wow, that's a blast from the past for me. I used to read his site 10yrs ago, then for about a further year or two maximum after that . . . ain't bothered with it since.

It was pioneering web info on 'the scene' in BKK, a decade ago . . . 'Bangkok Bob' too deserves a mention.
