HeijoshinCool
*sigh* Thailand. Come to Amazing Thailand and travel worry free in out new "rape-free" compartment! Or, if rape's not a big concern, sleep on your stomach like a baby, in one of our regular coaches. Even if the train derails, you'll not wake till the sun comes up, refreshed and ready for your sunny holiday in Hat Yai, just an hour away from many major terrorism tourism spots of the beautiful south. You tried to entertain me but failed miserably. . That's odd. I wasn't even thinking about you when I wrote it. By the way, social commentary isn't meant to be especially entertaining. MK1
Hard to determine the actual cause in Thailand because the country does not have specialist’s in the area of toxicology or biological science. However, the last event similar to this was in January 2013 when allegedly two-three men drugged two staff of a Resort in Phuket and robbed the safe-boxes. The men filmed on CCTV have still yet to be apprehended. yellow1red1
Entire car of train passengers drugged say Police Entire car of train passengers drugged, Thai police suspect However, Pol.Col. Wiset said it is "very unlikely" that the victims were drugged because some of passengers were still conscious when the theft occurred
Time Traveller
This is an alarming story. Between the SRT and the NCPO they are really doing a poor job at getting rid of crime. Since the coup, seems the crime rate is higher.
kuiburi
I only ever took a train once in Thailand, the first time I came here in 2002. BKK to Hua Hin and it took twice as long as the bus does so I never saw the point. Much less comfortable than the bus too, I to took a train once , but they saw me and i had to give it back . Tokay
I love how they call the rape free car a "lady car." Cute. Just call it like it is, it's a car where they will *try* to prevent women from being raped and killed. And the fact this car is even needed is shameful.
HerbalEd
What could be drugged that everyone in the same rail car could possibly consume??? air sticky rice/somtam...they like their food these people.. Is that what you people think?
jpduggan
What could be drugged that everyone in the same rail car could possibly consume??? Most likely they were gassed. This happens quite a lot on campsites in France where crooks pump a gas into a camper van and then go in and relieve the owners of all their possessions. Can't understand why there aren't any CC Tvs on these trains.
tookwan cottage
Those passengers whose arse hurts aren't saying anything I guess. I just want to express "JoeThePoster" that you are a certifiable comedic genius and should embark on a career in the industry immediately. Furthermore, your avatar title is also a work of pure genius. How do you cope in such a mediocre world?? You sir are most certainly not the reason for the recent visa crackdown. I nearly fainted from the laughter. Edited August 6, 2014 by tookwan cottage

Interesting that even a campervan is considered highly unlikely for this type of crime! So an entire train carriage is even more unlikely .... maybe. smedly
I'm sure there are lots of ways to put people into a light sleep using gas but also very dangerous, I find it highly unlikely this method was used in this instance I'd be more inclined to look at catering or food and drink sellers on the train, I've never been on a Thai train so have no clue how the distribution works If I was investigating this I'd be very carefully checking food and drink supplies
apetley
What could be drugged that everyone in the same rail car could possibly consume??? Possibly Gas....Gangs sometimes use this in Spain through the A/C system to knock out everyone (including the dog) in the house and rob them whilst they are sleeping... There is absolutely no way gas sprayed into an outside compressor can find it's way into the inside of a house.
khunken
Given that only 9 were robbed and there were 30 in the carriage, some (if not all of those) not drugged and robbed, it doesn't look like gas was used. Far more likely that it was food or drink, either supplied by SRT or picked up at a station along the way. BTW the volunteer rangers are not train guards - just passengers. mrdome
I only ever took a train once in Thailand, the first time I came here in 2002. BKK to Hua Hin and it took twice as long as the bus does so I never saw the point. Much less comfortable than the bus too, Yes, and bus travel in Thailand is so safe as everyone knows... You are not comparing train sleeper to standard bus for an overnight journey, so your "much more comfortable" doesn't apply here. I've never seen a bus where you can lie completely flat. I've always enjoyed my long trips in 2nd class, no aircon. Would be impossible to drug the air in those coaches as well as the air flow from outside and back out the windows can be quite strong. Keep your money close to your body and carry few other valuables. While trains can derail, you are safer in one of these steel cages than a flimsy bus chassis - in the hands of a driver that can nod away or make a critical error at any time, not to mention that trains never get a flat tire at 80+ km/h.. bander
The tourist numbers is down, that means less foreigners to scam, so drugging and stealing from train passengers will be the new income for Thais.

Ricardo
Perhaps the SRT should consider a special coach for thieves/victims-only, following on from their women/children-only ones ?
impulse
If anyone wanted to knock out our entire office, all they'd have to do is spike the 20 liter jugs in 2 water coolers (which also feed the tea pots and coffee machines). Hopefully, someone would notice everyone else is asleep, but I wouldn't count on that in a train full of sleepy strangers. I can also imagine the passengers each receive a free bottle of drinking water when they board the train? Probably a lot easier and more predictable than gas. daveAustin
Highly unlikely to be " gassed " on the Ordinary 31 baht train from Pattaya - Bangkok...... x Not so sure about that, what with all those large, sweaty-bottomed whiteys bumbling about. :)

DefaultName
If they were drugged, what did they ALL consume in sufficient quantities to knock them all out, but insufficient to kill or even hospitalise, WHATEVER their body mass? I don't buy that, sorry. If there was such a thing a sleeping gas, don't you think every riot squad in the world would be using it? IMO, more likely just a thief among the passengers who was very good at his job.

That could be one way of drugging most of the passengers, provided they all drank the water. You can actually pop the entire cap off of some of the cheaper bottles of water without breaking the seal. The seal on these bottles is so poorly designed that some times you HAVE to do it that way just to drink the water because the stupid seal snaps without the lid being completely released. IMO, more likely just a thief among the passengers who was very good at his job. That's the "beauty" of low concentration spiked drink or food. They eat or drink it until they pass out, self regulating the dosage. Hundreds of stories about guys and gals waking up in their hotel room with their goodies missing after accepting a free drink from a friendly stranger in a local bar. This time, perhaps it was done in bulk. I'll wait for the forensic report- assuming one ever comes out. Google Moscow Terror attack to see if there is such a thing as sleeping gas. The Russkies got it tragically wrong by not having an adequate plan to resuscitate the hostages, but they were very successful at knocking out the entire theater. ParadiseLost
Somehow I doubt that anyone who had the ability or means to drug an entire carriage would bother stealing mobile phones and 2,500 baht. My guess is a few of the train staff (6 have already been suspended) worked together, one or two acting as lookouts and distractions, while the other(s) go through bags. Hardly the work of a criminal mastermind when there is huge focus on the train security situation already...
