US actor Robin Williams found dead at home

SAN FRANCISCO: -- US actor Robin Williams has been found dead, aged 63, in an apparent suicide, California police say.

Marin County Police said he was pronounced dead at his home shortly after officials responded to an emergency call around noon local time.

Williams was famous for films such as Good Morning Vietnam and Dead Poets Society and won an Oscar for his role in Good Will Hunting.

He had been open in the past about his struggles with alcohol and drugs.

He had recently returned to a rehabilitation centre to "fine-tune" his sobriety, the Los Angeles Times reported in July.

"At this time, the Sheriff's Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made," police said in a statement.

In a statement, Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, said she was "utterly heartbroken".

So incredibly sad.  I grew up watching him on everything from Mork and Mindy to Mrs. Doubtfire.  He was an incredible actor and a great man.  He will be missed.  

You could always tell he was troubled at heart, even when doing comedy.

Please let's not just blame this on alcohol, which is just a substance.

I was never a fan, but may he rest in peace and be appreciated for the joy he brought to many.

Robin Williams dead; family, friends and fans are 'totally devastated'

(CNN) -- Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams apparently took his own life at his Northern California home Monday, law enforcement officials said. Williams was 63.

"He has been battling severe depression of late," his media representative Mara Buxbaum told CNN. "This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Coroner investigators suspect "the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia," according to a statement from the Marin County, California, Sheriff's Office.

Williams married graphic designer Susan Schneider in Napa Valley, California, ceremony in October 2011. Schneider sent a written statement to CNN through the representative.

The tragic death of Robin Williams just goes to show that Depression affects all segments of society - it doesn't discriminate. A massive loss to both the Movie and Recovery community - a man who has made a significant impact upon many peoples lives. I hope that from this tragedy, that more awareness and compassion for people suffering with Mental Illness will be raised.

How terribly sad.  One of my most favorite actors.  His new show was very funny also.  Incredibly talented.

It wasn't the alcohol, perhaps that just provided the lubrication.

I liked his stand-up better than his movies, and I liked his movies a lot.

Terrible news, it's almost unbelievable that someone so funny, able to pull out one liners on a talk show that just had you cracking up, never knowing which direction his zany humour would take you next, unbelievable that someone like that could be so depressed as to take his life. My sister suffered from depression for 2 years after her marriage broke down. She said it was hell.
So sad, but thank you Robin for all the laughs.

He was brilliant, but exhausting to watch.  He had unbelievable amounts of energy.  He always seemed to me that he was always trying too hard - too hard to be funny, loved, and appreciated.  He overachieved on all those points as few have, yet I suppose it was never enough.  The great ones always fly too close to the sun....
