PHUKET: Club Med has agreed with Phuket's OrBorJor and Karon municipality officials to develop a public health and sports park on five rai of the exclusive Kata beachfront property.

The latest agreement follows a meeting on Monday (August 11) in which Club Med had initially agreed to allocate three rai for a public development upon renewing its lease with the OrBorJor next year.

As agreed in that meeting, Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) Chief Paiboon Upasating, along with Karon administrators and representatives from Club Med inspected the 36-rai site on Saturday (August 16) morning, to discuss what the public space development might be.

The OrBorJor has leased the prime seaside plot of land to Club Med since 1985, and its 30-year lease is due to expire in September next year.

Club Med representative and coordinator Mr Wijit Dasanthad said that Club Med is prepared to cover all construction costs for the proposed development, which was agreed among members of the inspection team would be (themed) “the lung of Karon … a green space ... for residents of Karon and Phuket to exercise and play sports.”

The development is central to the negotiations for the 30-year lease renewal, which will cost Club Med B27 million per year.

The lease renewal agreement must be made no less than six months before it expires.

I wonder which encroachment has to be swept under the rug here .

The Kata Karon orbortor has already encroached on the club med land with their big near beachfront building, as have a few other businesses according to numerous publications, but the Karon orbortor says they don't know how it happened.

Back in 1985 Club Med Inc. started to develop their property on Phuket.

I was resident on the island at the time. Lots of dirty deals done; supposedly

by the "Club" and their cohorts on the island. In essence a lotta pristine

forest & beach area was ruined all in the name of buying stuff with beads

& tokens by Club Med members on holiday. But hey...Phuket was very poor

back then. FYI..Club Med was on Phuket before the Holiday Inn (phallic eye

sore) was there. I can't help to wonder what 5 rai Club Med is gonna

"develop" for said green space? Their 5 rai or somebody elses....

I assume it will be the land on the north end of Kata beach that has recently been in dispute when Club Med tried to fence it off.

This land is not directed conncted to Club Med resort and will have little impact on their resort business.

But maybe not as it is prime beach front real estate.  Could be on the back side of Club Med - we will see.

Seems that any bit of good news is often met with criticism, fortune-telling and assorted conjecture.

"No good deed goes unpunished" seems to be the mantra among certain circles.

You ever seen a multinational doing a good deed ?

When they give away something to the public they earn it back indirectly. Multinationals are no charities.
