Soldiers impound assets of two forest encroachers worth 50 million baht

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: -- Soldiers from the Suranaree Field Force based in Nakhon Ratchasima province and officials of the Anti Money Laundering Office (AMLO) today impounded the assets of three influential people for encroaching forest areas in Soong Nern district.

One of the influential figures is Mr Amarin Yoosukdee, the chief district officer of Pak Thong Chai district.

Altogether the three persons occupied 1,095 rai of forest land illegally.
Soldiers raided four locations in Soong Nern, focussing on two major locations occupied by the Pak Thing Chain district chief officer.

The two locations were rented to another person, Sompote Srimai, to do sugarcane farming.

Seventeen vehicles were seized from the cane farms.

Authorities proceeded to another location rented by Sompote and impounded 10 mor vehicles used for cane farming.

All the assets impounded worth over 50 million baht were later taken to the Suranaree camp for examination.

The raid followed the instruction of the military junta to take back all encroached forest areas back to the country from influential people, mostly well-to-do tycoons, government officials and politicians.

More than 4,000 rai of forest land in the district were seized back in June.

??? The paragraph above refers to Pak Thong Chai. I think this must be a typo. I lived for a year in Wang Nam Khiaw, before they made it an independent amphoe, while it was still part of amphoe Pak Thong Chai. Sorry to see this story. Glad to see some influential people getting hassled.

This is close to the area where I am now.

There is a very big Army presence here at the moment. One of my Brothers in Law is assistant to the Pu Yai Bahn here (Soongnerg Amphur, Tambon Makurmai, Bahn Dongmaifai) and there have been some hefty and intense meetings of late. The areas concerned maybe in Amphur Pak Thong Chai as that land near here is government owned forest land and acknowleged as a no go area.

This is good news.
