18 people killed in southern insurgency in August: lowest in ten years

PATTANI, 5 September 2014 (NNT) -- The Deep South Surveillance Center said the number of deaths resulting from the violence in Thailand's Deep South in August has plunged to the lowest level in 10 years.

According to the center, in the past month there were 66 violent incidents in the three southernmost provinces including 22 shootings and 15 bomb explosions. Eighteen people were killed and 40 others were injured. The number was the lowest since January 2007.

More than 5,000 residents and authorities have been killed during the past ten years by insurgency that has erupted a decade ago in the three provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

The National Council for Peace and Order has announced that finding a sustainable solution to the violence in the area is one of its priorities.

Why are they proud about this??? There should be 0 killings unless there is a war going on and it's expected but not wanted. Life seems so cheap when you read this kind of C%^P. The 18 that did die had families and friends who are now left without the person! This news post is so unfeeling and without human emotion!

seems strange that the shooting of teachers, bombings etc rarely get a mention on the BBC, CNN etc......... anyone have any ideas why?

No Western government forces actively engaged, except some training, no Westerners being killed? In comparison to other conflict areas not that many being killed?

Only fools and economist talk like that, tell that to the relatives of the 18 dead, whoopee...

only 18 dead, wow, we sure hope that next months will also be "only " 18 dead...how

lucky are we that we can spare those dead people.... after all we have 65 millions of them right?

Because it's an improvement on the situation? Or you expect the Fairy Godmother to whirl her wand and make all good in a shower of sparkles?

First paragraph says "lowest since jan 2007"

while the head line says "lowest in 10 years".

2007 to 2014 or even if counting almost 15, it's not 10 years.

Sloppy reporting/ editing. Hard to take anything they say seriously; did they even read to other numbers correctly; such as numbers of dead? We just know for sure that it's grim in those 3 southern provinces still, and violence is on going. Just leave it at that.
