Tom Dundee given suspended prison term in defiance of military order

----------------------------20-wpcf_728x

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Military Court on Monday sentenced former folk singer Thanat Tanavajaranon, or widely known as \"Tom dundee\", to six months in prison and a 10,000 baht fine for defying the military junta\'s order to report to military authorities.

The court, however, commuted his jail term to two-year suspended sentence after he had no criminal records in the past and confessed to the guilt.

The court believed the suspended jail sentence would allow him to behave himself and turn a good citizen.

His lawyer Winyat Chatmontri disclosed later that a lese majeste charge brought against his client is pending interrogation process by the Crime Suppression Division police and has not yet brought to the court for trial.

However he said Tom Dundee’s remarks during an address at a public gathering and was considered less majeste by the police, was made before martial law was declared.

Therefore the lawyer said the military court has no authority to handle the case.

The Bangkok Military Court also gave another redshirt activist AnurakJantavanich two-year suspended sentence in defiance of the military order.

He was sentenced three months in prison and a fine of 5,000 baht.

But the jail sentence was also suspended by the court.
