Thai officials defend buying costly Government House microphones

That will cost altogether Bt53.80 million.

Everybody seems desperate to paint the Thais as either unsophisticated or corrupt.

How would you react to news that the White House or Downing Street were spending $1.5 million on an AV system? Would you be outraged? According to you lot, the Thai government should be buying their microphones at Toys R Us.

What you forget is that this is about Thailand, and it affects our Thai families. So, I guess we don't give a rats about the US or UK...please keep it local.

I hope the golden microphones, which, in light of the available facts, cost about 47,000 - 58,000 baht more than the mfg. list price per unit at the time of purchase (99,000), work better than the GT-200 did. Also, if the government wants "ill intended individuals" to stop spreading rumors, they might want to reveal the facts. Why wait for an investigation when you can just lay all your cards on the table? After all, they are all about "transparency." 555

"As the department earlier planned to spend Bt67.99 million on the system, the bargain resulted in the department saving about Bt14 million for the state, Mr Monton said."

At first I thought they were corrupt officials intending to steal taxpayer money, but it turns out they actually SAVED us money!

A quick Google puts this device available today at around $2000 US or Thb 63,500!, so that means they paid around Thb31,500 over the top, excluding installation and kickbacks.

then you have to add shipping, import duties and taxes too, in Australia they are another $300 to $500 more than the US so here they will be even more expensive with the high import costs but I suppose if you want to have a bitch you need to use a bit of innuendo and half truths......

price does include all the installation work as well

So the government doesn't have the power to swerve tax on items for themselves? Should have got some grey import car dealers to show them how its done.

Everyone should pay the going rate of tax. By doing so the govt shows they are as liable as any other individual or company.

Always an excuse in these situations and it never stacks up to the facts.

When A.N.Other Thai official stands there and makes these statements, what does he think happens to his precious 'face' ?. Doesn't he realize what a total t*t he looks ? (is tit allowed on here ?). Somehow they seem to put it aside in situations like this which shows what a joke it is.

Chalerm was a master at this. What happened to him anyway ?.

Frantic calls no doubt taking place between both parties after blatantly getting their hand caught in the cookie jar.

If you cannot see through this whole charade you must be blind!

They're in the room now, shouting across it.. with no microphone in use!

Thais are civilized people, they talk through microphones.

Unlike uncivilized British Cabinet parliament session, when both side shout and swear at each other. Order. ORDER.

I enjoy seeing British Parliament. They sit close together on benches too. Not all looking at porn or whatever on iPads. There is an intimacy, an in your face quality that is refreshing. I would much prefer having those uncivilized barbarians passing laws that impact my life than the most hi tech unelected Thai parliament seeing over the carving up of Thai resources, stifling free speech and free press and overall being unresponsive to anyone save the current mafia that happens to be in power. Other than some mistakes mid 1700's (I'm a yank) Brits have done an admirable job for the most part.

Oh yes John, tit is a jolly decent word used to describe an idiot or a person doing a foolish thing, someone making a boob.

Society has no problem with the singular, it's when that naughty "s' is added and you have two of them. Therein lies the problem.

It's OK to say "He acted like a right " tit " But then that leaves people wondering about the left tit.. Once you have two tits then a cover up is needed.

ummm... how much did Thailand pay for the GT200 detectors? cheesy.gif

Around 1.1 Billion Baht according to the other paper (this includes the Alpha 6 detector - a similar beast that came in two variants. It detected bombs or drugs...................allegedly).

Back in 2013 the NACC were going to lay fraud charges against all agencies in Thailand that bought the useless detectors, but I guess they changed their mind.

I think 95000B/piece is about the correct price (including import taxes, installation costs and central controller).

The price is not exceptionally high for this kind of product and you would pay about that price in Europe too (including installation).

The question is of course - does the government really need such an advanced conference system, taking into account there are so much more useful ways the money could be invested.

Surely this kind of product is a luxury item, like let's say i-phone. So, does the government pay to itself the 50-100% luxury import tax when purchasing items like this? And later it claims a tax refund from itself?

...just some strange thoughts whirling thru my head.

No Jeremy they do not.

We are currently selling a high value item into Thailand to the government from a (Thailand) tax free zone, full duties and taxes are applied and paid.

The government is not as dodgy as you imply.

"PRIME MINISTER Prayuth mapped out policies for emphasising the King's sufficiency philosophy, the junta's guidelines and demands from the people"

So please tell me how this super expensive microphone is part of King's sufficiency philosophy?

I am sure that HMK doesn't waste money on such expensive and unnecessary gadgetry in the palaces or at Sirirat.

'... the bargain resulted in the department saving about Bt14 million for the state ...' I wonder if they would spout the same kind of self-satisfied nonsense if the cost were coming out of their own pockets. But no doubt they are looking to be congratulated.

In 18 months time there will be a new PM who will spend another fortune doing up Government House, while paying lip service to the sufficiency economy.

The United Kingdom House of Commons has been the same for hundreds of years, with the politicians packed in, mass debating each other under the orders of the speaker.

They built and dismantled an empire, all without the aid of expensive sound systems and microphones.

They are so closely packed that no-one dares even fart.

The Thais by comparison have a magnificent Parliament in which to run their Kingdom.

C'mon guy's really, this much cash for mic's in a room for 35 people,,, sorry it doesn't add up for me, after working in a school for 9 years, and on occasion the class would be up to 80 students at a time, NO MIC required,,, I also set up the mic's and sound system for assembly's that would hold over a thousand students plus parents, ONE MIC used under a 100 bucks AU,,, regardless of your political persasion, is this ok or could the cash be far better used elsewhere???

No offence meant, but H.M. the King has no need for a multi-media conference system in the locations you mention.

Things are a bit different for a parliament or in the topic's case the cabinet meeting room. Where some seem to suggest that as part of sufficiency one might return to the good old days when we used blackboards and chalk, nowadays any government wants a wee bit more than just that.. Mind you, with only blackboard and the natural timbre of voices it surely becomes more difficult for interested people to skype-in into meetings rolleyes.gif
