PHUKET: -- Tourist Police commander Col Jirapop Phuridet yesterday received a recognition certificate from the USA’s Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for his part in the arrest of a wanted Ukrainian man in Phuket in 2009.

At the request of the US, Col Jirapop assisted in the arrest of Maxsim Shynkarenko, who had fled to Phuket after a US court issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of distributing child pornography via the internet for profit.

In the culmination of a three-year investigation in the US, Shynkarenko was indicted in 2008 on one count of conspiracy to transport and ship child pornography; 16 counts of transportation and shipment of child pornography; one count of conspiracy to advertise child pornography; 12 counts of advertising child pornography; one count of engaging in child exploitation enterprise; and one count of money laundering

Col Jirapop arrested Shynkarenko in January 2009 at a rented house in Chalong. Shynkarenko then spent three years fighting extradition. He lost, and was handed over to the US.

In August 2012, Shynkarenko, labelled by US authorities as “the most significant distributor of child pornography ever prosecuted in the US”, was arraigned and in January this year he pleaded guilty. In April he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Bangkok-based Regional Attaché of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Brian McPherson, came to Phuket personally to thank the island’s Tourist Police and present Col Jirapop with a certificate of recognition.

His experience will depend on his personality. This will be hard time in a federal pen, and he'll be in isolation to protect him from other prisoners.

If he's a loner who can stand isolation locked in a steel cell where even the toilet is solid steel, he can do his 30 years. Otherwise he might go mad.

A lone bullet would be a lot cheaper.

I remember about 3 years ago they were openly selling child porn on beach road Pattaya. There was a video of a police man getting his kick back out side one the big shopping centers in Pattaya from one these porn sellers. Coming from the West I felt disgusted even seeing the front of the dvds that were on sale.

You should also be equally disgusted that it could well have been a Westerner that took the video and made the covers.........................

Child porn is not specifically a Thai thing, but I will admit that like yourself, I find it hard to get my head round how they openly sell it in some areas.
