PM Prayuth’s first visit to flood-hit Sukhothai impresses locals

9-12-2014-9-30-01-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

Newly appointed Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha today went on his first official trip to Sukhothai province to visit flood victims in the area to the joy and tribulation of local residents.

He led cabinet members to Sukhothai’s Kongkrailat district after delivering his government’s policy statement to the National Legislative Assembly.

He was warmly welcomed by locals.

He told them that the government needs to come up with sustainable water management plans and that all parties should adopt HM the King’s flooding initiatives to handle both drought and flood problems in the country.

Authorities concerned have been tasked to outline flood mitigation measures, starting from the upstream rivers of Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan to the Chao Phraya River in central Thailand until the water mass heads out to the sea.

The measures are scheduled for cabinet’s approval within this month, he told local villagers and officials.

He said up to one billion baht have been earmarked for this year flood mitigation efforts.

He warned that all measures should be transparent so relief aids can be sent to all flood victims in time.

The premier also handed survival kits to flood-affected villagers and encouraged them to stay patient as the government promises to send aids as soon as possible.

Gen Prayuth’s first public visit as Prime Minister was tremendously greeted by local residents when his plane landed at Phitsanulok airport Friday.

The PM was taken aback by the crowd that greeted him like a pop singer with screams coming from both young and old residents when they caught their first glimpse of him.

When the PM arrived at Wat Krailat, he was also greeted with a screaming crowd.

He smiled shyly at the pop singer treatment he received and told residents that he was surprised by the wonderful welcome.

He said at first he thought the people may have had disdain for him as he has been interrupting their soap opera viewing every night since he seized power with his hour long rhetoric to address the public on the government’s various efforts to resolve domestic and political issues.

Reporters accompanying him to the flood area said the prime minister displayed his charisma and charm when talking to the crowd dropping witty lines and comments which led to bursts of laughter every so often.

He also sought residents’ permission to visit them again in the near future where he promised to sing the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s song to “Bring Happiness Back to the People”.

The prime minister boarded a boat to help distribute aid kits which gave him the opportunity to talk to victims directly. His down to earth demeanor impressed everyone and members of the press were surprised that he patiently answered all questions and posed for photographs.

On being asked whether the day’s visit was tiring, PM Prayuth simply stated, “I must ensure that the people’s livelihood improves. I must never be disheartened and forge ahead to solve all of the people’s problems. We must learn to live together in peace. We must learn to share. I’m not tired at all. Being an army general was more tiring than being the PM.”

The premier’s good nature and sincerity puts people at ease.

Besides, his easy mannerism and light heartedness has impressed locals, a reporter joining the trip described.

Interesting.......

With "tribulation" meaning "trying experience" or "distress or suffering resulting from oppression or persecution" there seems to be a bit of a contrast with the "joy" mentioned.

Maybe the reporter didn't have his OCD at hand to check and thought he wrote about "paying tribute" to a great man wink.png

All that in just one article, impressive.

Oh and there were some floods there apparently.

I'm surprised no one asked him about the 50 million Baht the government was going to allocate for flood damage repairs, as talked about in January 2013.

I don't know about THB 50 million, but according to the article below in May 2012, most of the THB 50 billion was already spent.

The article you quote deals with the major flooding disaster in 2011. I was referring to the aftermath of the September 2012 Flooding in Sukhothai with on 21st of Jan 2013

"Natural Resources and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboonsuk revealed on Sunday that he will seek an approval from the Cabinet for 50.1 million baht in a special budget to construct and restore flood walls and levees along the banks of the Yom River at in Sukhothai province."

So, flooding anyone ?

And while we're on the subject of the thread entitled, "PM Prayuth’s first visit to flood-hit Sukhothai impresses locals", just how impressed were the locals? By reports, I would say very impressed indeed. Ecstatic, even.

Were you unimpressed because he was not wearing Burberry boots and the local people who matter (far more than you or I) seemed to like him?

As far as I can understand he tried to be helpful and to talk to and down to the people.

It seems you were so impressed listing all those items which impressed you that you almost forgot the reason why PM Prayuth came to Sukhothai, since you wrote

"Oh and there were some floods there apparently."

Mind you you forgot the more general

"The measures are scheduled for cabinet’s approval within this month, he told local villagers and officials.

He said up to one billion baht have been earmarked for this year flood mitigation efforts."

So, mark in your agenda to ask about this end of the month. That is if your really interested in progress in Thailand

BTW did you notice the topic title? It would seem you're right about 'some floods'

"PM Prayuth’s first visit to flood-hit Sukhothai impresses locals"

PS you might easily have missed a previous topic on this as it didn't have much for you.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/757936-sukhothai-fights-flood-as-barrier-on-yom-breaks/page-2

It would seem you're really shameless in your anti anyone against "Thaksin, Pheu Thai, UDD" attitude

It's more PR than news, obviously -- the poster was remarking on something that is hard to miss. You seem shamelessly ready to characterize anyone that notices your poster child isn't the Messiah.

Further -- you are a martinet, rubi. "martinets often use etiquette and other rules as an excuse to trump ethics, to the point that etiquette loses its ethical ground.

Well, first of all let me thank you for providing the description of "martinet", although I would have thought you'd include the English base sense first (the term martinet is usually used not in reference to the whip, but to those who might use it ). Especially since that poster even baited me with "You're a junta punter, aren't you".

Anyway, I fail to see why I might be unethical by remarking on "Oh and there were some floods there apparently". It would seem in the haste to score points the poster was so insensitive (or unethical) to just by-the-way remark "oh, floods". Such remarks would certainly hurt those affected by the 'floods'.

This and the reports in the press and the reaction of certain entities when PM P is criticized is getting very ,very scary . Dear Leader springs to mind

I think some people need to have a long hard look at themselves and realize what they are supporting and becoming complicit with

Sorry to be a cynic, but salt and/or grain should be involved. Snide remarks about related new involving a certain Nort-redacted leader with a huge ego pointing at stuff could also be made.

This is of course pure propaganda. Its embarassing for the current regime as they promissed no flooding after shooting down the actuall plan to make flooding less devesating.

Its just a fact that if another 2011 situation arises, Thailand is not one step closer to preventing that flood to put huge part of industry and a don muang airport under water again.

THe Yingluck government spent a few hundred billion Baht on flood damage repairs, adding revees and 'lock them in' walls around Industrial Areas and so. Surely that will have helped a lot ?

BTW I think the 'current regime' has been careful in saying much about floods apart from picking up the 'urgent' 350 billion Baht plan of the Yingluck government and get some real people involvement this time round to ensure input and acceptance.

It's much more government bureaucrats who were 'sure' there would be no serious flooding. Mind you, although lots of people affected, the flooding indeed doesn't seem too serious ? I'm wondering if the revee which broke along the Yom river was properly repaired after the September 2012 flooding there ?

where is the picture with all the soldiers surrounding the great leader

Had you looked closely at the lead photo, you might have noticed at least 2 military police, and several cops. He is not in danger of his life, why would he need to be surrounded? This isn't Pyongyang.

He obviously feels welcome among the locals, as he should be.

He is not yet "The Great Leader ", but he may yet have greatness thrust upon him.
