SoilSpoil
The hill tribes have destroyed most of the forest areas in Chiang Mai and Rai. Just take a trip to Doi Chang to see what I mean. There are too many hill tribe people involved with the commercial plundering of the forests.
halloween
The HILL part might suggest that they prefer land with a slope which would make it illegal to own, if they had citizenship which allowed them to own land.

Johpa
Oh please, the largest factor of deforestation is from direct and indirect encouragement from big-agra in Bangkok such as the CP Group. In effect the hill people are only doing what they are being encouraged to do by the extension of credit and the provision of seed. The forestry officials turn a blind eye as the top officials are paid off and the local officers are plied with whiskey and sex. And it is not just hill people involved so stop drinking that glass of Kool-Aid. Travel east of Phrae and you see the same denuded landscape as you see in the Karen regions west of Chiang Mai. Or if you are visiting Chiang Mai go have a drink at one of the resorts above Pong Yang, such as the popular day trip at Mon Chaem and admire the lack of forest from the intensification of agriculture by both Thai and Mong. The deforestation is the direct result of Sino-Thai corporate power in Bangkok wanting to extract as much as possible from the land. And before you shed too many crocodile tears, take a look at the formerly forested regions of Europe and North America.
