British backpacker arrested for suspected murder of fellow Britons at Koh Tao

The policing of this case has to be one of the worst I have ever witnessed, the very idea that two innocent young people can be murdered on a small island, which was nearby police HQ, and not only that, cigarette butts, blood, DNA, a weapon, and god knows what else were left behind - and the police many days after the incident have openly admitted that they don't have a clue who is responsible, nor do they know who the suspects are (since the original suspects were cleared and released)

Posters on here are debating that this will have a serious impact on tourism etc, and perhaps it will do in the short term, but I think what is equally off-putting, which should affect tourism just as much as the crime itself, is that the law enforcement for the island is practically non-existent, how on earth would you feel safe on an island when you know that the people there supposedly protecting you are either laughably ineffective or not at all interested in your welfare to begin with.

I have posted on here and told many expats in Thailand in the past that if a fatal crime is committed against them, tell your friends and family not to expect any justice

Pathetic to read ignorant farang equating crime in the West to crime in Thailand where the police open an investigation with the statement "No Thai could do this"...

Well done chaps.

And of course the Thai press sitting quietly in the corner as always.

The only pathetic posts are your posts. As I said earlier, don't be so narrow minded. Anyone could have done it. We, the westerners, do not hold a moral high ground. Get some perspective.

Police Treated British Rape Victims Like ‘Stupid, Naughty’ Girls

A sex abuse investigation in Britain raises difficult questions of race and child protection.

LONDON, UK — There was the 12-year-old beaten and burned before her illegal abortion. The intoxicated 13-year-old girl arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, while the men with her were released. Two different fathers who stormed houses in search of their teenage daughters, only to be arrested and the girls left with their rapists.

A major UK newspaper investigation and subsequent inquiries have uncovered sexual exploitation crimes of historic scope in Britain, and repeated refusals of police and child protection agencies to act on reports that something was wrong.

For the last 15 years, organized groups of men have been grooming and sexually abusing girls in northern and central England cities.

Girls as young as 11 were targeted in shopping malls, town plazas and other public places by older teenagers or adult men, who purchased their trust and affection with attention, car rides, gifts and alcohol.

“Some say focusing on the men’s race obscured that they were just as much a product of Britain as the girls they raped.”

Once they had established what the girl believed was a relationship, the requests began: If you loved me, you’d sleep with my best friend. Or my uncle. Or this stranger. Sometimes men received payment for use of the girls’ bodies. This led to girls eventually being raped by groups of men at a time, trafficked between cities for sex and beaten or threatened if they resisted. Small groups of men operated together, though it does not appear that the groups were part of a larger coordinated network.

More than 1,400 girls were attacked in this way in Rotherham alone, a south Yorkshire borough of 258,000 people that released a report Tuesday detailing the “blatant” failure of police and local authorities to stop the crimes...

No such inference from my end , simply pointing out that the Nationalistic/ Racist posts seemed to be inspired by that particularly crass statement. It was Alanrchase and others who took umbrage and decided that criticism of local police/officials equated to criticism of all Thais/Thailand as a whole.

Tell you what..have never known such a response on UK news Sky ,BBC.. as this has brought....They have really been critical. Thai officials , government , General and particularly the Thai police are really getting a hammering..Quite unusual and taken the amount of media attention on the Scottish independence is even more

amazing....Bad stuff so often happens in Thailand but is so often hushed up or covered up..ie the amount of suicides !! I'm not saying I disagree

with the news reporting just its about time the police there are found out for what they are....useless !! and crooks...allegedly !

A post on here earlier (SirBser - a few pages back) claimed that a story was doing the rounds on the island, that Hannah had been getting unwanted attention from a Thai man, and David had to intervene and then got into an argument/heated conversation with him. This then led to the Thai man leaving and getting one of his friends, they then decided to wait for Hannah and David to leave so they could make there attack.

May I ask you , how do you know it was a Thai man and not a migrant worker from Burma or somewhere else? For a tourist its difficult to seprate Thais from other Asian nationalities.

This is just a story , who told it first ? Be careful to blaim any nationality in this tragic case.

What we need is evidence.

What we do know is that on the island a majority of the people working there are immigrants from neighboring countries .

Well I would assume that LOGIC may dictate the way we look at this.

Westerner frequented beach bar on a tourist island is not going to be offering its products at prices that would be attractive to an immigrant worker. They almost always drink among themselves with shop bought cheap alternatives.

However, you will almost always see the more well heeled Thai man at these sort of places because he feels he can afford it.

Personally I have never seen immigrant workers frequenting even Thai run bars if the price of a beer is more than 65 baht a large bottle. But having said that, I can normally tell a Thai from a Burmese or Cambodian man, especially when they open their mouth. It's a bit like when you have lived in any country for a certain amount of time, you pick out the dialect in their accent.

If people are saying that it was a Thai man in the bar in altercation with the victim/s you can pretty much put your monry on it being a Thai man, and probably with money. (the worst kind).

I just can't believe that the police actually ruled out a Thai national as the murderer based on the stupid attitude that 'Thais would never do such a thing'.... Thailand is one of the most violent places I have ever been to. Even the school kids kill each other.

I am really thinking twice on whether i want to bring my kids up here.

you have to think twice?

once wasn't enough?

I was with a Thai girl for a while,

when she brought up having kids, it made me realize what an awful mistake it would be, for the kid, and I left her and Thailand

I personally feel that the rest of the world looking in that is reconsidering coming to Thailand because of this murder wouldn't care if it was a Thai or Welshman that did it.

The crux of this is two young kids got killed IN Thailand, who killed them will not matter to anyone other than the family and us that live here or spend time here

it's even worse now that the PM has made jokes about the victims

this will be what people remember

LOL!! you truly believe that almost EVERY young thai male will commit rape if he thinks he can get away with it? how DO you guys rationalize living here!!?? lol

I'm Thai, it's my country, why are you here?

because i enjoy it . and unlike you dont despise most young thai males

don't despise thai males?

that is kinda funny, since most of the girls who put profiles on the sister website Thai Friendly, openly despise thai males

Perhaps they've got the results but are still no closer to knowing who did this or at least the results didn't go to script. It's all looking very awkward for the BIB whichever way you slice it.

"Dr Pornchai said he expected results of DNA tests on the two victims would be known by Thursday afternoon."

One thing I never understand in these types of cases here, is that the crime scene is never sealed off for forensics, just a few hours after and there are all sorts of people all over the crime scene.

Been to some? Seen what happens? Or just a casual observation from pictures in the press?

No, just from all the other cases I have followed over the years.....and seems the same has happened again here......

"BBC south-east Asia correspondent Jonathan Head said police have admitted they "really don't know where to look now".

He said investigators had several problems, including that the crime scene was not sealed off and people were not stopped from leaving Koh Tao after the killings."

"Growing questions about the police's handling of the case are emerging, particularly over why they did not seal off the island following the murders and why they only appeared to conduct significant forensic work around the crime scene on Wednesday, more than 48 hours after the crime."

Jonathan Head may aswell just come out with it, and say what we're all thinking;

The entire investigation has been a complete and utter shambles. Inept, clueless, unprofessional and total disaster.

God only knows what the poor families think of all this. The Thai police should be prosecuted for gross negligence, as it now looks as if this crime will remain forever unsolved, whereas if it had of been handled better from the start the culprits could have at least been identified by now.

Or if you were to look at it another way, exactly how you would want to handle it if you didn't want the real truth to ever be known as per many previous 'investigations' but unfortunately for the authorities this time it looks like the Western media will really push the point home that you cannot expect real safety or justice in Thailand which like I said earlier will come back to haunt the whole of the LOS for a long time. The people who I really feel sorry for the most in all this are the poor innocent people murdered so brutally and their families who could never have expected such brutality or incompetence in the LOS :-( #RIP

Yeah perhaps the police have purposely overlooked certain things, so that they can protect 'someone'

Either that, or they are just genuinely the most hapless police force in modern times

This SMELLS from cover-up

obviously, the offspring of a mafia group,

You cannot tell me that there is no footage of the bar, the outside of the bar, and elsewhere,

even a teenager can match the face of the guy running away, with a face on the bar,

this SMELLS

It isnt but Thailand makes one heck of a big thing about being a fantastic tourist friendly country and how safe and smiley it is, not how you can be 50 meters from your guesthouse and get murdered exactly where your supposed to be safe not out off the beaten track or something but on a beach with everyone else around sleeping no further away than 50 meters.

to be fair,

if they had an altercation in the bar,

they should not have gone to an isolated spot behind large rocks,

they walked right into this by not having enough healthy fear of the possible danger they were in,

alcohol will dumb down fears,

it is sad this happened, and I am in no way blaming the victims,

they just were not well advised not to go to a hidden spot no matter how romantic it is to sit by the water,

usually when you are being followed, you will know it through your 6th sense, but as we all know

mix in alcohol and fatigue and those senses are just plain gone,

I feel it is well known to the associates of the killer or killers who did this

It is just as plausible to assume that this was the route back to their cottage seeing as they were so close to it, and if there had been an altercation in the bar, it is very likely that David was possibly escorting her back, which in fact highly probably.... Whether or not there was anticipation in the air of something extra on top to round off the night.

What i also find very strange (and I am yet to read anyone else touch on this) .... How the hell was this attack and atrocity possibly orchestrated in absolute pitch darkness? I mean... have you ever walked on a beach in the dead of night on a remote island? You can barely see a hand in front of your face. Let alone be able to carry out such an obviously coordinated attack on two young people.

Surely there must have been torches used, and there must have been screaming and shouting as the horror was unfolding. Which makes me think that there must have been a gun involved to instil fear and cooperation then dispatched them with a more silent method.

Using nothing but logic here, so don't pull me apart... I don't know what the hell happened here just like anyone else, but these are valid questions. Also it is rather unlikely the animals that did this would want to rape a dead person... that is a totally separate brand of crime altogether... So I think it can be safely assumed that Hannah was fully alive while being raped twice.... Yet remained silent.

To be honest.... I would seriously be wanting to talk to the bar staff of the bar they had just left, as they may have ended up being the last people to see them alive and possibly prime suspects, seeing as the staff were supposed to have immediately fled the island because they were working illegally just does not wash.... I would be hunting them down.

Let's face it... This must have been done by people who are very very confident about the immediate area of the crime to have the confidence as well as share a cigarette as though they had been merely waiting for a bus.

I sincerely believe this was done by either staff or customers at that very bar. That is exactly where the investigation should be focussed.

Again just my curiosity to untouched on questions.

The moon was up for several hours by then and a half-moon at that which was sufficient visibilty to see a distance across open beach; however, difficult to detect figures hidden in the shadows of the large boulders.

Its interesting how much better Thai people can see at night than most farang, whose night vision never developed as much due to the artificial lighting our societies have long had installed.

that is preposterous

there is no such thing as pitch black on the ground, and sand is generally white reflecting anything

this was a murder done in cold blood, under the influence of a violence provoking substance whether it be a drug, alcohol, a mixture of jealousy and anger

all of which was initially mentioned, jealousy in particular as the girl was very cute and just being blonde and cute can be enough to get you killed in Thailand apparently

I'll accept that.

A half moon would give enough light to show outlines.

But a coordianted frenzied attack?? May be a bit awkward I would think. But if Thais, like you say, they would have been at an advantage being able to see better and have the element of surprise.

But maybe they were not lying in wait? Maybe they were all together basically David and Hannah being pestered by some islanders which turned nasty as they were rejected. I mean... alcohol plus SE Asian hair trigger rage.... I have seen it up close on much more than one occasion.

I never meant to get you so offended.

Obviously some folks are a bit more emotional about the topic of night vision than others.

Please accept my apology.

Yep... No such thing as pitch black... Obviously if there is a light source like the moon which I already accepted. But you walk along a beach when there is no moon or only a tiny bit of moon.... trust me, it is pitch black. I ought to know, I spent 6 months camped on a beach on Lake Malawi in Africa and I can tell you now... If no moon I was always walking slam into locals walking the other way, and that was on white sand. They didn't see me either. So you had to whistle while you walked.... no joking.

from news reports in Australia coming via BBC the crime scene wasn't contained and was totally contaminated with tourists and media walking all over it along with the police. Apparently a crime scene has still not been established by the BIB. Evidence has been totally destroyed and it is something like a tourist attraction.

Foreign press from the supposed first world countries love to comment on the inefficiencies of supposed third world countries.

In terms of policing, in which world would you put the BIB?
