Asia river cruise guide A guide to river cruises in Asia, on the Yangtze, Irrawaddy and Mekong including the best cruise lines, typical itineraries and alternative routes and key stops

Asia is home to some remarkable rivers, from China’s mighty Yangtze to the Mekong which flows through Vietnam and Cambodia. Many are jungle-clad, wild and untamed. Some are even uncharted. But the real attraction is that they provide exposure to fascinating cultures, traditions, religious and spiritual practices, and a wide diversity of peoples. Where road travel can often be tortuously slow and unpleasant, river travel offers both a practical and serene alternative.

For those who appreciate magnificent engineering achievements, the Yangtze, coursing through 18 Chinese provinces and pacified only by the gargantuan Three Gorges Dam is the journey of a life-time. Surrounded by misty mountains and permanently changing its colour palate from mustard yellow to emerald green, it's a cruise for lovers of photography, too.

If you want to come home with travel tales that few of your friends will be able to match at least for now, the Irrawaddy river, in Burma (Myanmar), is a good option. Only recently re-opened to mass tourism after two decades of military rule, Burma is - for now at least - one of Southeast Asia's uncharted treasures. Most river cruises will take you to pottery and fishing villages which have kept many of their traditions intact for centuries.

Quit fancy the Irrawady but at @120,000 Bht per person.....maybe her indoors might have to visit the relations for a few daystongue.png

Jokes aside, I recently spent some time on an "up-market" cruise due to the fact some equipment we were installing had some bugs we had to sort out. I was so glad to get off, superb food, wonderful accommodation and the biggest lot of narcissistic onanistic individuals I have ever come across.

not much available on the Mekong as it is difficult to navigate in places. for 3, 4, 7 nights ( more ) the Mekong Explorer offers an upscale cruise product. it travels up and down the Mekong from Cambodia right up to Luang Prabang, Laos (during parts of the year). Or you can hire a few local fisherman who may take you down the river from Chiang Khan. have done this and was fantastic!

Well; I hope you told the onanistic individuals to stop rocking the boat!

Did river cruises on the Song Be and Mekong in the late '60's. Not many clean bathrooms or air cons along the way, but many other attributes.

And, to clean-up any spillage on the deck.
