Yesterday some cops chained 3 motorbikes.

On Soi Ket Khwan in Kata. At the entrance of the new Palm Square. In front of Sukhee Massage.

The 3 bikes where at the end of a long line of parked bikes, where the red/white signalisation starts. Not hindering any traffic.

The fine was 500.-- Baht.

Considering that the minimum daily income is supposedly 300.-- Baht, the fine seems to be very high.

Question: Can the coppers ask for as much as they want or need, or are there any official tariffs?

Just curious. None of the 3 bikes was mine.

So, to continue with the pedantry, is the fine the same amount considering it occurs in a soi or a thanon ? The OP also asked if it was an official fine, not what you think to be standard.

To continue even further with the pedantery, please note the original question "Can the coppers ask for as much as they want or need, or are there any official tariffs?" which essentially is answered here:

http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/boolean/bool_2.html

so it makes my previous answer clear.

PS: Normally I hate hair-splitting, but... wink.png

If the vehicle has been ticketed the fine is stated on the ticket and an official receipt will be given at the police station.

If the person whose vehicle was targetted was not issued with a ticket and pays the officer unofficially then the "fine" is negotiable between the 2 parties.

Does not work that way.

The vehicle is not ticketed but chained, fine to be paid at the police station.

Saw a car in New Sukhothai City parked the facing the wrong way in a one-way street, it had a very basic wheel clamp padlocked to one of the front wheels, first time I've ever seen this in Thailand.

Fine on the window screen ticket, 400 baht to be paid at the police station.

You could easily jack the motor up and put the spare on but I guess they have photo's and numbers etc. biggrin.png

All that matters is what it is. And yes, this is the standard fine, to be paid at the police station, upon payment of which the motorbike will be unchained. A receipt will be given as well for the payment.

I gave an answer, and mentioned something BTW, know what that means? Do you have something to add to OP's question are are you just here to irritate?

My error, I mistakenly took your original "BTW" to be arrogantly dismissive sarcasm, btw......

I think 500 Baht is the standard amount. Ketkhwan or Katekwan is not a soi but a thanon BTW.

I used "Phuket's first ever street directory". Streets of Phuket. An Image asia publication. They call the street "Soi Kat Khwan".

Google map calls it "Ket Kwan"

Centara Kata Resort on the same road calls it "Ked Kwan".

Whatever.

The chain went through the backwheel and over the saddle. Between the saddle and the chain was the ticket. Stating the fine of 500.-- Baht.

So all legal and above board.

I see them here (my shop is in Thanon Ketkwan so I'm here every day) quite regularly, always chained, but never noticed the ticket. Also when I forgot to move the bike once or twice from one side of the street to the other I was chained, but don't recall the ticket.

But thanks for the correction, good to know.

Everybody calls it 'soi' BTW, but according to the official paperwork it is a thanon.

The coppers seem to be getting worse.

Yesterday they chained 2 bikes together. (Maybe not enough chains and locks?) One bike was exactly on the yellow line (In front of Richi's restaurant.) The other one was over.

However, I still wonder, if there is an official list of violations and fines. For example like this one:

<snip>

Was it parked on the correct side of the street? I'm asking because you're right, normally they don't chain if on/over a yellow line, who cares. Unless somebody has complained of course.

My wife tells me that the thai script is the same in both photos, but the English script in the top photo is incorrect.
