Common Mr. Expat....WE are periodically cheated and scammed by our own Government, with taxes, with insurances, with banks, with credit cards, and many companies and stores we deal with...in hundreds, and thousands.....and when a young guy that may have no job, no house, no family, and no money, is trying to get 1 EURO from you in kind of "honest" way....you have a crisis of pride and you risk your life getting into confrontation..

Again......for 1 EURO.

Definitely should have paid the parking fee...if you live long enough in Thailand, you know what must be done, but I do believe 40 baht is too much for a few minutes. Assuming the British Resident is telling the truth and didn't leave the car there half the evening while he went down to his local watering hole, I would have negotiated the 40 down to 20, and left. I sadly know a few who would fib about this and put on an act after leaving their car parked for several hours while they drink and in their drunkenness, create a scene over stupid things such as parking fees.

If a simple solution would have been thought out instead of dismissing the attendant, the attendant wouldn't have attacked the car or this gentleman and he would have saved himself car damage, pain and medical expenses and the attendant would have slept in his bed instead of in jail.

ALL THIS FOR 40 THB! I hope it was worth it!

I am sure that what the kid did was unlawful when he hit the car.

Certainly the kid needs punishment for his crime but prison? I we do not know the full story, but if he is as guilty as it looks I favour an instant win in the Thai National Lottery... that is the one for conscription.

Without being specific and staying within the rules, I just want to say: "generation zero"--total idiots running down the road of "new barbarism." Amazing Thailand!

so i assume that you would let them walk all over you then

Someone 70 years old should know better than to confront a teen.

The outcome was never going to be favorable.

40 baht or broken arm, i would have dropped a hundred and moved on.

Like Ive said ad nauseam: The best you can do is to ignore ( no contact/communication ) all Thai males. But thats quite a challenge as there is a s### load of them everywhere

Reminds me of the old line about Italy being a fantastic country if it wasn't for the bloody Italians. Apparently there's a shedload of them wherever you go and the locals are very keen on making even more. Disgraceful, really.

Some people do not have the balls to fight for its rights in its own country, paying parking fees everywhere, fined sometimes for parking in front of its own home, but comes to Thailand and found the balls to risk its life defending its "rights" to park its car for free .....Hero?

You would just be making the problem worse then and the opinions of Thais towards falang that bit lower. Anyone caving into a snotty kid trying to extort money should probably not be living here in the first place.

so....attacking crusty old farts with intent to do bodily harm is part of his job discription? destruction of private property part of same discription? there is no such job discription, the cheap old crusty fart did not use good judgement, if it were my lot there would of been a boot on the weel 1 minute after he parked there. throw the bully in the slammer & drop a hefty fine on the old fart. both are dump as a box of rocks.

We all know that this story is unfair......we all know that hitting a 70 year old man is downright sick regardless of whether he is in the right or wrong. But we all know that we need to play the game ...get ripped off every now and then and walk away.

Only a matter of time before a few expats get together and form a vigilante group to dish out some payback to the scum in this town tho. Might make the "pack" attackers think twice too !

I'm assuming that you are speaking of the young attendant and not the elderly gentleman, but it's not generation-zero and it has nothing to do with Thailand itself. We do not live in a first world country and that comes with consequences. We do not live in a Western Culture and that brings consequences. We live in a society that most uneducated young Asian's believe that if we are Farang, we must have a money tree hidden in our backyard. Why do they think like this? It's not their fault...it's our own fault. It's all the generations that arrived here prior to your generation-zero that came to a country where they felt invincible and rich with the little they make at home, here back in the days, they were kings. Older men paying young women who could be there daughters to be with them etc... We all created this... It has nothing to do with "Generation-Zero" or even Amazing Thailand...it once was "Amazing Thailand" and they wish it could be that way again, but things change and we've put into motion what is most hated in Thailand. People lose sight of this and place the blame on the Thai's, but if you think about it, how many stupid Farang drunks are out there who cause the Thai's to hate us Farang's?

Another thing that annoys me a lot here is that in some restaurants, when you finish eating, "car park" staff spot you from one mile away, run to you to escort you to your car, help you open/close the door etc...

The essence of Thailand. They "pretend" to be nice and to help you. But they are just putting pressure on you to tip them. This is a form of extortion.

I never give them any money

Nice of the man in uniform to squeeze his arm to see if he was telling the truth.

Should have paid his parking fee.

If you live and drive in Thailand you should know the procedure.

If he was back at home he would be looking at a 3000 baht fine.

Agree, as far as I know this is a 24 hre. car park, and 40 Baht is very reasonable. Try telling a clamper or traffic warden back home that "I only nipped in for the newspaper". I suspect (but obviously do not know)that the attendant felt belittled by the driver's attitude and arrogant behaviour by trying to just dismiss him and drive away.

Over reaction by the arrogant attendant, but stupid not to comply for B40!!!

Exactly dotpoom. Try telling a clamper at home you didn't want to pay.

I believe the old fart should have just paid the 40 baht. Talk about cheap Charlie. He should have never illegally parked or gotten out of his car. Not smart to challenge a younger man.

Right.

Perhaps some day you'll have the opportunity to visit Thailand.

Good god don't any of you have any balls, do you enjoy bending over and letting any Thai give it to you, pathetic!

Here's the next victim.

It's not about having balls and bending over...it's all about life in a country that we are not originally from. It's about compromising... It's about learning to live in a different culture than our own. If you are not willing to compromise or learn the culture and want to live by your standards without a care in the world for the country you live in (Thailand), then why stay here? Why not just go back to your own country?

It's people like you who cause all the problems and then place the blame on others.

Just say no thank you and it's taken care of. There's no need to get your panties in a twist over someone trying to help you for a tip. Hell, I wouldn't help someone to their care from my place of work for free, would you? I'd expect a tip as well...you know, they do add up and if you work in such an establishment as in any other country in the world, tips come with the game.

Some yaba head street punk tries to shake down an old man, then assaults him with a deadly weapon (baseball bat size stick) when the old man tells him to piss off.

Up to now this guy has been struck with a ---piece of wood, a baseball bat, a baseballbat size piece of wood ,and a PLANK of wood. Anyone know what he was really hit with??

Do you mean, if I understood you well, we, as "falangs", must carry vaseline and accept it? No wonder Thais think we're easy targets!

Sorry, not my style.

Nope. You've got it <deleted>-backwards. It's people like you that encourage scum like this to do what they do.

We're all entitled to our own opinion and I know yours and you know mine. That's the end.
