Five illegal migrants apprehended at border

BANGKOK: -- Five illegal migrants — three suspected ethnic Uighurs from northwest China and two Bangladeshis, were arrested and charged with illegal entry in Aranyaprathet district yesterday.

The arrest came after authorities received a tip-off that many illegal migrants, including Muslim Uighurs from China’s Xinjiang region, had been hiding in Cambodia’s Poi Pet border town and were preparing to sneak into Thailand.

Patrols were mounted along the Khok Sabaeng-Nong Ian road in Tambon Tha Kham and a suspicious looking pickup truck travelling at high speed was spotted and ordered to stop. But the driver refused, prompting the police to chase.

The police successfully stopped the vehicle and found the driver was a retired policeman, identified as Pol Sgt Maj Vichit Puen-nguluem, 57.

Five foreigners were in the vehicle.

He was detained for questioning.

A search found Bangladeshi passports in the bags held by two of the men. They are identified in their passports as Moral Mohammed Abbaz Sabur, 41, and Addin Mohammed Shofie, 42.

They told police they were from Bangladesh and had sneaked into Thailand for work after failing to obtain a visa. Police suspect the other three men, who refused to speak, came from China’s restive Xinjiang region.

Col Phichit Meekhunsut, commander of the 12th Rangers Regiment in Sa Kaeo, has instructed all ranger units at the Thai-Cambodia border to tighten measures to prevent Uighurs from entering illegally.

Aranyaprathet police also suspected if the five are the Turkish illegal immigrants who escaped from a detention cell of the immigration police in Map Ta Pud since Saturday night.

Six illegal migrants were sent from Phang-nga province to the detention centre of the immigration police at Map Ta Pud, Rayong province, pending court trial on charges of illegal entry.

But the six plotted the escape by asking their friends to hire two taxies to the detention centre. When officials were about to bring them food in the evening, the six Turkish broke out of their cell toward the two waiting taxies.

However, police managed to capture the two taxi drivers and one Turkish. The other five Turkish men escaped into the woods in Tambon Huey Pong.

About 100 policemen and volunteers were mobilised today to scour the woods in search of the five escapees who were thought to be hiding in the woods.

An unimportant detail. Was he arrested or taken for a few drinks? What do you think?

The article does say, "He was detained for questioning."

My guess is he will say the reason he didn't immediately stop is because accelerator was struck and the brakes failed....and he just picked up some hitchhikers which turned out to be illegals to his surprise.
