Popular Post robertthebruce
No, as this is the kind of justice I expect in Thailand, Money or Influence talks..... That's for sure, Not a week goes by, and there is something. Crazy that happens, and then it's all forgotten about, and the Culprit is out walking the streets again, i.e. - "Redbull Grandson"..... I could go on, but we all know and are used to this.. How they can live with themselves, beats me....
Popular Post Rooo
Don't want to sound uncaring, but after a while hardly anyone remembers. A couple of murders ( high profile ) took place on Samui & it's always business as usual. The only ones concerned are the people living here & they remember, as for the general tourist populace I don't think most of them are aware.

Pretty much agree except that only the family and close friends of any victims truly remember. Those still living here only really get upset when it happens again but like myself, they probably don't dwell on the realities of life (and violent death) in LOS.
PiPiFFS
As Roo says come high season it will be all but forgotten apart from the family. People will still come on holiday and to learn to dive and always will.
Popular Post mrtoad
Having lived here 10 years, and been spending time in a Thailand since 91, then it is sadly no surprise, even though it is repulsive and anger provoking. The ineptitude and corruption that is all to evident will goon for a lot longer. The lack of a functioning police force that is respected and trusted is all to evident. The majority of Thai people, I have found to be good people and that view hasn't changed. I will certainly give Koh Tao a miss, and advise any family and friends to do so, but I'm not going to condemn a whole nation.

Boatman
I have been through with Thailand for a while now. A hotel wanted 10k baht for supposed "damage" I caused to a room (a drawer wouldn't open and the ice cube tray in freezer was cracked) I lost my temper and insisted the manager call the police. The police listened to both sides and said I owed 20k baht - 10k for hotel, and 10k fee to BIB for settling the dispute. When I protested I was threatened with "Monkey House". I came to my senses and offered 5k. Cops took it and left.

Popular Post kurnell
This is the ugliest thing I have seen in Thailand in my 20 odd years here. A complete disgrace. Even the Thais are ashamed, and I am waiting for justice. The arrest and prosecution of the real killers would make me feel a lot better about Thailand and would improve Thailand's reputation no end. I hope that postings such as these keep pressure on the government here.

farang000999
what is most interesting about this tragedy is that social media is changing the willingness of everyday Thais to speak openly against the various "mafias and police" that rule over them. there is a lot of steam being built up below the surface.
farang000999
Tourist Thailand sucks. I figured that out on day 3. I don't know how many can stand to live right in the middle of rip off central.

Thailand has always been lawless. But now the younger generation are more outspoken and have a more global outlook. They don't take it up the butt by authorities like the older generations. Popular Post khunpa
To me personally, it will have no effect. I am here because of my family, the weather, the people and the reasonable costs of living. We have always known the police was corrupt. Nothing new or surprising about that and the police arresting two burmese guys was of course expected. However, the case has made me think deeper about Thailand's future, which I must admit makes me worry. I truly believed that the coup and General would change things, but I can see now that everything is just same same. I also see that real and fast changes are basically impossible, due to the overwhelming corruption level in this country. What I foresee is this country soon being hit hard financially, due to e.g. lack of tourists and foreign investments, household debts, corruption and a housing bubble. It has already started, but will be much worse in my opinion. With the mentality of the Thai-people (constant focus on only fast and easy money), this is going to hit many people really hard and be a "wake-up" call for real changes in this country. The current system and mentality here is rotten to the core and has been so for many years. I believe that this case has shown that to the world and other cases will come in the near future. The only thing that really will change this country is it going down financially and lots of time for the general mentality to change. I feel sorry for the Thai-people. Because, by them being passive, naive, greedy, selfish and making corruption a natural part of life, they themselves have ruined what was on of the best holiday places on earth. And in the meantime other surrounding countries have learnt how to treat tourists and foreigners in a good way, so they come back. Thailand has unfortunately lost that.
Costas2008
OP, if I can tolerate all the other things and customs that are bothering me and I'm still happy living in Thailand, the Koh Tao murders will not change my mind. I feel sad and cheated and wish things were better and Thailand grow up, as they say, but I doubt that I will see any change in my lifetime. Hope this happens for the future generations and for the good of Thailand the country I still love and enjoy being here.

Aussieroaming
Bad crap happens anywhere so no this doesn't sway me. Someone just chopped up and partially cooked his partner in Brisbane, but that doesn't mean I will never go to or live in Brisbane. It's a sad event and maybe mismanaged but it doesn't happen everyday
Cypress Hill
The murder itself has no effect on my decision to be based here. I have made a conscious effort to avoid situations that might lead to contact with the RTP, though. Deliberately avoiding that left turn onto Asoke Montri from Sukhumvit when in a taxi at night, for example.

daveAustin
I'll go against the grain and say it has changed my opinion. I've seen a lot in my time but this whole thing has been an utter disgrace, such that I would be out of here were it not for the effect it'd have on others. Yes it happens everywhere and things get forgotten/return to normal, but the stink around this case is palpable; of innocent, slain people then treated like meat in the name of face. After all the lies, rubbish talk from the PM and knowing that if you step on the wrong toes or accidentally make some perp lose face it can all go wrong for you, living here just seems all the more unpleasant. I've always known this of course, but this case just brings it to the fore. I dunno, perhaps I'm a hypocrite for staying on, but two things I won't be doing again: Koh Tao and recommending people visit this country.
