Intelligent Aussie horror film "The Babadook" hits Thailand's movie screens

Featured Replies

There is so much total CRAP that's gets released in Thailand that it's easy to miss the occasional gems they do show here. For example, "films" that are basically C movies direct to DVD often get released in Thailand (and elsewhere) as if they were ever worthy movies. Many, many are fooled and spend their baht on such garbage.

Tip -- OK, you'll probably know the actual Hollywood blockbusters and they are fine for what they are but for the other non-Thai movies, definitely look them up on IMDB first!

In that light, let me suggest the release this week The Babadook.

It is not crap.

Yes I saw it and really enjoyed it.

One thing, I wasn't actually sincerely scared and sometimes I even LAUGHED when I don't think that was intended, and nobody else did, so yes, I'm weird. In any case I was genuinely ENTERTAINED.

Inspired by horror classics like Friedkin’s The Exorcist and Raimi’s The Evil Dead director Jennifer Kent’s extraordinary and audacious debut is a white-knuckle knockout with a truly unique vision. Not since Robert Connolly’s The Turning has an Australian film showcased such raw and exciting new talent – in front of and behind the camera.

"Jennifer Kent's film creates something original, even frightening"

The performances, especially the extraordinary Noah Wiseman, are pin prick perfect. Kent has the confidence to ignore horror cliches and find a more expressive way to freeze your blood.

Often smaller films don't have very long runs here ... so if you want to see this on the BIG screen in Thailand, best be quick about it. It just opened .
