Ed Visa, Now Thai Wife Extension, Can I Get A work Permit !

Featured Replies

I successfully obtained a Marriage Extension on my ED Visa at Kap Choeng a few weeks back with no problems, it was suggested by one of the Officers that i get a Non Imm B Visa if I want to Teach.

I am sure I have read somewhere that I can get a Permit based on my Extension until it expires then can get B Visa, or if I change my visa to a B will my current extension still carry on (Until September 2015}

A bit of a Dilemma !

You can get a work permit and work (teach) with an extension of stay based upon marriage. No need to go out for a non-b visa.

Immigration has nothing to do with getting a work permit so an immigration officer may not know what can be done.

I know several teachers on extension of stay based on marriage with work permits.

But you said you were on Ed. Visa.

The extension due to marriage doesn't make getting a work permit easier, it just allows you to stay in the country.

If you find a job offering a work permit it saves you the time of needed to get a Non-b visa.

You now have a visa eligible to add a work permit.

You still need a work permit to work legally.

He does not have a visa of any kind. He has an extension of stay based upon marriage.

Previously he had an extension of a stay based upon attending a school also not a visa.

His reason for extention has been changed to marriage. He no longer has an Ed.

Edit: Sorry Joe

An extension to stay based on a Non-b visa would be tied to the work permit dates and the job.

Quit the job then loose extension of stay.

A work permit on extension of stay for marriage allows you to work but does not effect your extension to stay.

Since you had the money to get one year extension based on marriage I can't think of any advantage of changing to a non-b.

Since you were in the country to study, why did immigration think you wanted to work as a teacher now? Your wife agreed to marry you knowing you weren't working. Why would he think you wanted to change?

It does not matter what the original visa used for entry was based upon. The only thing that matters now is what your current extension is based upon.

You can get a work permit.

Just be sure a copy of your marriage certificate is with the application for it.

As others have made clear with posts on this topic a "work permit" is not dependent on what visa or extension you are on.

Simply being married to a Thai does not get you a work permit.

The first step in getting a work permit is being offered job with a Thai company.

From that point there is a organized procedure that leads to a Non B visa, and a work permit and a extension of that visa based on being employed by a Thai company.

That's how you get a work permit to work in Thailand.

A non-b visa is not required to work and it has nothing to do with getting a work permit. All that is required is a non immigrant visa entry or an extension of a stay obtained from one.

I have already been offered a job, and am aware about WP, was not sure about ED Visa, Joe has answered my question. Thank Again Joe !

The poster talking about getting a job teaching after changing his extension of stay to based on marriage implied to me he was thinking it was now easier to get a teaching job with valid work permit.

Not sure if I am assuming correctly.

A school may illegally hire a teacher (no work permit) if they have an alternate method of staying in Thailand.

Still need qualifications and job to apply for work permit for legal work. This part isn't affected.

While on extension of stay for educatuon and found a job then would have needed to convert to non-b.

Qualifications for all jobs?

I saw the poster's question got answered.

But to get a job, everyone needs qualifications for the job and for teachers the government makes requirements to issue work permits.

I was led to believe in some cases experience in the field of work was acceptable and qualifications for teaching in universities or language schools were not needed. Hopefully Mario can clarify this ....

The School that has offered me a job is very aware of my Teaching Skills, that is why I have been offered the job. I am picking up the Contract Tomorrow, and they will help with my Permit and License.

Universities and language schools and business are not controlled by the Teacher's Council.

Every job need to be qualified to be offered the job. Qualifications depend on the job.

Congratulations on the job

He said nothing about his qualifications. Maybe has PhD.

My comment was his change to extension based on marriage doesn't effect his ability to find a job and get a work permit.

Can you get WP while u on ED visa?

Friend ask

Can you get WP while u on ED visa?

Friend ask

No you cannot get a work permit with a 90 day non-ed visa entry or a extension of stay based upon attending school.

While on a tourist visa and you get offered a job then they can apply for a work permit, go to immigration with all the paperwork and get the non-b visa and then the work permit can be completed.

Extension of stay for retirement and I am assuming extension of stay for education they can't apply for the work permit and then apply for the non-b. Not same as being on a tourist visa.

Correct?

Must start the process again from tourist visa?

But if change extension of stay from education to marriage then can apply for work permit.
