dsfbrit Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 Chris2004, I agree, as I said in that post, 'I have decided I am going to replace the Premier service anyway, it is too slow for what I need it for now. so it is more a case of what with'. I was considering the 10 Mb solution you have or the 3BB 13Mb solution. Since hearing other people's thoughts and experiences though, I am now considering fiber optic, if indeed it is offered in my area. I am off to Pattaya to True and 3BB today, so should know later, or at least have arranged a survey of the home to find out next week.
dsfbrit Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 (edited) Well I am back from Pattaya. I only went to True. As they had run out of brochures and I wanted to understand their packages and study them at home (and discuss with you) I came straight back home. They don't offer the fiber optic line here, but they have this promotion. http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-sook/entry/2525 What do you think???? They basically are offering 30Mb/3Mb for a year as a promotional upgrade to their 12Mb and 18Mb internet packages. Costs range from 800 - 1000 baht per month. These internet packages have various offerings from their cable TV packages. I am not too interested in their True TV packages, as I would only want the sports channels for the football and I get that from 365Sport anyway. I don't suppose they do, but does anyone know if True block Torrents. I watch mainly downloaded TV series from the UK (ie: series such as Only Fools and Horses from years ago and Death in Paradise recently). So I don't need any TV or even news. I just want a fast internet that works. Do you think this would be a good reliable enough deal??? It looks pretty good to me. They will install within 2 days. Almost too good to be true! Thanks again for your help in deciding what service to buy. I really don't want to be signed up to a service for 12 months that 'stinks' that's for sure. TOT are coming here next week, maybe I should wait for what they have to offer. Their fiber optic service looks very good - if they can install it here that is. Edited October 23, 2014 by dsfbrit
dsfbrit Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 Burl Ives, I have just realised that this is your package isn't it? I would only be interested in the internet. The TV package, telephone for the house and free mobile phone offer is of no interest to me at all.
muratremix Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 TOT is ok for Thais, terrible for farangs. Fiber optic does not change anything. TOT has high pings, bad routing, unreliable throttling / unreliable speed.
dsfbrit Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 muratremix, I appreciate your comments, but this is what confuses me when I try to find out what service is good. In post 4, IMHO says that the 3BB services are using the TOT infrastructure. Other 3BB users ie:Chris2004 in post 8 says how good the 3BB service is. Why is 3BB service better than TOT, when it is using their infrastructure? I think I am going for the True connection anyway.

TOT has it's own huge network but very poorly managed and the worst I have ever seen. 1

dsfbrit Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 IMHO - thanks for that err.... I think I am beginning to better understand why there are issues with the internet service providers over here in Thailand.

True isnt bad for the price but it has limitations. Heres why i installed fiber and will soon dump true if all stays as it is. I use slingplayer and after my village neighbors started all signing up for true it really crawls between 7pm-12am. True blocks xbmc!! as far az torrents true works good. True technicians were prompt as are 3bb.
muratremix Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 If one downloads torrents frequently, perhaps invest in a seedbox for 5-10 usd / month and download to there instead of your home. Then, download via ftp at full speed.
dsfbrit Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) I went for the True 30Mbit/3Mbit package in the end. They were very efficient. I went there on the Tuesday, signed up for the service and they came and installed it on the Thursday. They arrived in the morning as they said they would, ran the cable to my house and installed the cable modem and set top box (for the free True channels) - this all took about an hour. I did not have to pay anything for the installation as luckily enough the cable run from their 'box' in the road was less than the 70 Metres that they install for free and the TV was near the point of entry into the house. I was quite impressed, as when I went to their office on the Tuesday, they could see how close their junction box was to my house from the computer in their office using their GoogleEarth (type) interactive map with all their connections listed in my area. I was lucky, as the interactive map showed quite clearly that my neighbour had True installed a while ago and so they had a junction box just over the road from my house. This made it easy for them to decide if they could provide the service to my house and so they did not even need to do a site survey, as the junction box was so close. The actual cost of the service is 799 Baht plus tax, so it is 850 Baht per month. I pay monthly. When the promotion package ends in 12 months time, then to continue with the same service and monthly cost, I have to make a one off payment of 950 Baht. Once this one off payment is paid, then I just continue with my 850 Baht monthly payment as before. I am not sure what would happen if I did not make this one off payment. In a years time there will be other packages around so I shall decide what to do then. The cable modem has an inbuilt wifi router that can be 'seen' from everywhere in the house and it can be accessed by my wife and her friends using their mobiles in the garden as well. So I won't fit an additional wifi router for now anyway. It is early days, but I am delighted with the service and was able to watch the football last weekend via 365Sport without it stopping to refill the buffer a lot of the time. So thanks to those of you who suggested True, I would never have gone to them without the recommendations here, as my last experience of True's satellite service about 7 years ago meant I avoided them like the plague! As an aside, I went to TOT 2 weeks ago (in fact it is 16 days now). I filled in their forms for a full site survey to determine the fastest service they could provide for me and I have not heard from them at all ! Edited November 7, 2014 by dsfbrit
