95 day trip - visa requirements?

Featured Replies

I've only had one short previous trip to Thailand, now planning a longer one, and hoping someone can help regarding visa requirements.

I’m 60, booked to arrive in BKK from Canada on November 26, and fly home again February 28, for a total of 95 days. Also I may have to pick up my visa from the Thai embassy (which is an inconvenient distance away in Vancouver) a few weeks in advance. I’m also planning approximately a 2 week trip to Laos via Chiang Mai in mid December, and perhaps a short trip to Malaysia in early February.

Can anyone tell me:

1) What type of visa is required for 95 days in Thailand (+ a previous week or two sitting with my visa in Canada) with perhaps a few short side trips to one or two neighboring Asian countries?

2) Will visa extensions or border runs be necessary? Will I need to leave Thailand during the 95 days? Or get extensions in Thailand?

3) Since I will probably do 2 entries and maybe 3 to Thailand (initially arriving from Canada, then a side trip to Laos and perhaps Malaysia) do I apply for a triple or double entry visa in Canada?

Another option - Could I get a 30-Day stay when landing in BKK and then a visa in Laos? Or would I trigger problems in BKK, arriving without a visa as my return flight won’t be for 95 days? I hate stress at borders and would prefer to satisfy Visa requirements in advance, in Canada.

My wife won’t be able to join me until mid December, staying for about 60 – 70 days in Thailand (and perhaps Malaysia, but not Laos). What type of visa would she require? And would some sort of renewal be required?

Any help very much appreciated.

You can do that withe either a single or double entry visa, and so your wife.

Since you haven't decided yet exactly what you need to do, perhaps is better that you ask again when you plans are more firm

If I were you I would get a triple entry visa and get your wife a double entry visa! That way you would not have to go through the hassle of going to an immigration office to either get a 30 days extension an reentry permits.

The cost of a triple entry is 3000 baht, a double 2000 baht, extensions 1900 baht and reentry permits are either 1000 baht - single, or 3800 - baht multiple. Not knowing your exact schedule any other method could actually cost you more.

Visa exempt entries wouldn't work as you will most likely need a ticket exiting Thailand within 30 days of your first entry to board you flight in Canada.

Ottawa is not your only choice to get your visa plus you can do a mail in application.

See here for locations: http://www.thaiembassy.ca/en/visiting-thailand/visas/obtaining-visa-canada

You both could apply for your visas at the same since you will have 3 or 6 months to use the visas.

Maybe plan your trip around the visa instead of the visa around the trip. You will need a triple entry tourist visa to cover your trip. Also reentry permits after arrival in Thailnd so that you do not lose entries on tourist visas. How about setting down and planning your trip around 2 entry tourist visa plan your departures for Laos when it is time to activate your second entry tourist visa. You will need a tourist visa as you will not have a ongoing airline ticket within 30 days of arrival on a visa free entry.

I am confused here, A single entry tourist visa will get them 90 days , They also should be able to get a reentry permit also. If they go to Laos for 5 days that would cover the 95 days or if they got 2 reentry permits they should be able to leave and reenter twice ? Looking at cost of Visa

Help me out here UbonJoe, Am I way off ?

A two entry tourist visa would be needed to reach the 95 day number. A re-entry permit would add no time to the 60 day entry and/or 30 day extension.

If the OP was to give us a rough itinerary for his trip it might be possible for him to do the trip with visa exempt entries or just a single entry visa.

Thanks UbonJoe for setting me strait . wai2.gif

Thanks for the help guys. Ubonjoe suggested more itinerary details would be helpful to determine visa selection. Hope this helps:

I will arrive BKK from Canada on November 26. Spend about 2 weeks in northern Thailand - CM – CR – bus to Chieng Khong, then about 2 weeks in Laos - cross the Laos border to Huaxai (I think) - (slow boat to Luang Prabang) – Vientiane – Udon Thani – back to BKK. Open to any ideas here.

I am flexible about this part of the trip but need to return to BKK in late December when my wife arrives (or she will be very grumpy). Her exact flight times are not determined yet but will arrive around Dec 21. We'll have about 10 days around Bangkok then travel south to the Thai islands.

When we go south we might continue on to Malaysia for a week or so, but don't know enough yet to have a firm itinerary here.

I have hotels booked only in Bangkok and C. M. in the early stages of the trip (in November and December) and a one week SCUBA boat trip booked on the Surin/Similan islands in mid-January, otherwise flexible.

I fly out of BKK Feb. 28, my wife will go about 2 weeks sooner.

We live in Victoria, closest consulate is Vancouver, and I understand our visa time starts ticking as soon as we purchase the visas in Canada (?), which may be a week or two before we depart. Mailing out visas is a cheaper option but I am nervous about a lost passport. Is this dependable and how long does it take? I will phone the consulate.

I am baffled about all the visa options, extensions, runs, etc. Any clarification is much appreciated.

Since your first trip out of the country will be overland a visa exempt for your first entry would not be advisable.

A two entry tourist visa would get your first entry and then the one back into the country. Then you could get a 30 day exempt entry on your return from Malaysia if you go.

A single entry would be enough for your wife and then the visa exempt entry.
