First dog park in Bangkok set to open next month

BANGKOK: -- The first-ever 47-million baht dog park in Bangkok is set to open in November after having been delayed for over a year.

Director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) public park work Ms Veena Wongsinchao said now the park was 92% completed with minor work on the running tracks which are still under improvements.

The remaining work is mostly relevant to quality inspection by BMA officials before full delivery of the construction project by the contractor to the BMA, she said.

But most of dog toys, exercise equipments were all ready for use, she said.

She expected the dog park will be opened in November, a month behind its scheduled opening in October.

The dog park covers a total area of 4.6 rai on Soi Watcharaphol off Ram-inthra road in Bang Khen district.

The first zone is the screening zone where BMA is cooperating with the Department of Health to have two veterinarians stationed to screen dogs to make sure that they are clean and disease free.

The walking or towing zone where special control must be implemented for fierce dogs, and the free zone where dogs are allowed to go free.

She said it needs registration of dogs visiting to the dog park which will be announced to the public before opening to services next month.

According to the BMA governor M.R. Sukhumband Paribatra, the BMA is planning to open such a park in three other locations, including at Suan Luang Rama 9 Park, Bang Khun Thain Beach, and Soi Petchakasem 69 (Bang Bon 3) to cover every corner of Bangkok.

Each park will have facilities such as veterinary consultation, exercise areas for small and large dogs, running tracks and watering areas.

The park will be divided into 3 zones. The first zone will be looked after by the BMA’s Health Department. Dogs will be separated into different categories before they enter the park, as different types of dog require different level of attention.

Moreover, there will also be veterinarians on standby to look after the canines.

The selection of the location of the park is considered the most important task as it has to be an area unlikely to create nuisance to nearby residents.

I think it is a very good idea. I cannot see why building more parks is a waste of money - unless you for some reason want more concrete jungle.

I am a dog owner (and yes, I clean up after my dog). It is difficult to find proper areas for exercising and walking your dog peacefully without fighting with crazy soi dogs - or annoying TVF members. So it is a win win situation for all of us.

amen to that as-long as its not my tax baht and yes you have annoyed me

This is pretty incredible and I tend to agree with most of the intelligent comments. Incredible because it was only about 1984 when I first saw a Thai giving affection to a dog as a pet. Most reasonably fed and maintained dogs (that is not strays or Temple dogs) were kept as watch dogs. I was looking out of a widow at the back of the old Honey Hotel in Soi 19 Sukhumvit, and saw a Thai woman greeted by her dog in long-gone garden. She must have been out all day and made such a fuss of that dog.

Now look at the shelving of dog food etc in supermarkets. Everything from Pal to Gourmet. In 1984 there was nothing. Things have changed, dogs come in pinks and greens, Thai women are allowed to drive, there are Thai bands, Thai advertising on TV, Thai models are allowed to do underwear ads. And now a ridiculous dog park. Put the money into something more worthwhile boys.

Now, how about the BMA setting up some parks for people, ideally where dogs are banned. Bangkok (and most other Thai cities), have a lamentable lack of green space. Typical of the BMA to put middle class dog owners above families with children. We have a tiny park in the Victory Monument area that is so busy it's not fun to be in. How about putting the city's kids, joggers, aerobic fans and the rest of us, ahead of pampered pooches?

How about some parks for HUMANS first. Bangkok is pathetic and shameful in it's near total absence of green space, other than Lumpini. What they call parks, we would call "empty lots" in USA. I'm from Portland Oregon which had (probably still does) the most space per capita of parks of any city in USA. I don't consider space under elevated highway a park... And now a park for dogs. I assume decision makers all have dogs, right? Free running? So many citizens CARRY their dogs around, if they ever take them out of the car port area....

Hopefully the Authorities will keep the place cleaner than the streets, or the stench will be smelt a Kilometer or more away.

Wishful thinking maybe.

I certainly woudnt want to live anywhere near the place

My apologies I got it wrong. Dog is mans best friend, so you will not see any politicians in there at all.

Why all the negativity? I would love to live next to a park like that. Well i live in a moobaan with huge parks so i don't miss it but it's great to walk and not having the streetvendors around.

Thai don't give a dime about dogs, they only buy them for show or protection. As soon as the dogs are 1 year old they get rid of them or just let them be in the garden all day without taking care.

I agree that it's good to cleanup the turds but on the other hand the gardeners can do that as well. Also turds are hard as a rock within a day and kids don't play in the grass, they play with computers at home or in the sportclubs.

I hope BKK gets many more parks, i know so many thais who never ever walk around, even not in a nice moobaan as where we live. People are getting overweighted and should move more, also they should learn how great it can be to walk a dog. When walking a dog it is much easyier to make new friends.

ours will not crap anywhere other than in our garden and he always lets you now by doing a few laps at speed arround the house,so there's never any shit in the garden through the day.

BUT BUT the no of people[nearly all] that let their dogs shit anywhere,a park would be the ideal place for them.

BUT wait a minute they dont[nearly all] walk their dogs they are couped up all day behind their fence or wall and their shit can be smelled many house's away.

as for the park being run properly, what are you going to see maybe a park keeper or yam as they are known sleeping in a nice office with telle.and bottles of leo.

i am sorry but my dog is not going to roam arround picking up anything that other dogs are carrying.

i can just see the response from the authorities are BUT we will put up signs.clap2.gif

Money would have been far better spent eradicating the strays so it was safe and pleasant to walk your dog on local public streets. This park would be impossible for many to use they can't get their dogs there on public transport.

Also dog owners should be allowed to use regular parks with their dogs properly leashed and cleaned up after. Even smallish areas of those parks could be designated and fenced dog parks where your pet could run leash free.

All in all I find this huge dedicated dog park a very silly idea. Must have been lots of corruption money to be made out of it.

Eradicate the soi dogs and most of your problems in walking a dog go away.

You are so mean, Thai love soi dogs so much that they even feed them every day.

I even know a farang who puts collars around their necks so they won't get kicked out of our moobaan.

But i agree, dogs should not run around like here in Thailand, so many accidents happen from that. I even see soidogs full of scabies beg for food in open air restaurants or Thai who put their dog on the table in restaurants so the soidogs can't sniff their butts.

Your sending very mixed messages.

1) thai love dogs so much they feed them every day

vs.

2) dogs should not run around ... soi dogs with scabies ... thai who eat dogs.

Eradication of soi dogs can be done in many ways none to do with culling which is why I think your calling me mean.

Sterilization. Eventually they will die out

If you feed it, its yours campaign. That means take it off the street, vaccinate and take care of it.

Capture and removal to places where they can be looked after until natural death.

Mate i was just cynical, i totally agree with you that soidogs should not run around free.

I don't understand why Thai feed those dogs. I heard that if you put a collar around the neck of a soidog then it belongs to you and if it causes an accident then it is your responsability.

I bet that if i get a soidog under my motobike and know who the owner is (or the one who feeds it or put a collar around it's neck) that they will deny that it is their dog. Even if the dog sleeps behind their closed gate at night.

We have a farang here who put a collar around the neck of a soidog, all soidogs are kicked out of our moobaan except that dog. That dog opened my gate one day and mated with the dog of my friend (a high thai police-officer) in my garden. I babysit his dog sometimes. When i told that farang about it he didn't know how to react. (maybe he is reading here as well so i hope he learned from this).

I didn't tell the police-officer that the dog belongs to a farang who lives here because i don't want him to get into trouble. After all he only tries to help this dog and also he washes it sometimes but it runs around free every day. I also agree it is a nice dog who is not a nasty one but i just don't like the idea of farang trying to be smart this way. Now we only have this soidog here which is great.

One day we were at a temple and a pack of soidogs attacked a thai kid, all thai men got furious and grabbed wooden sticks to attack them. The dogs run away but i would say eradicate all of them asap.
