BANGKOK: -- The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has advised three children's channels and Army-run Channel 5 to revise their contents as they still lack good contents for children.

The national regulator’s advice came after its recent monitoring and evaluating of their contents showed they did not comply with the children content requirements.

NBTC’s acting deputy secretary-general Sombat Leelapata said the three children’s channels — MCOT Kids and Family, Channel 3 Family and the Loca Channel — did not offer real children content for children but most appropriate for general viewers, and also lack good content for younger children.

The category of children’s channel is meant to help develop appropriate contents for children, which is supposed to lead to knowledge enhancement among the country’s youth.

He said the NBTC found the three children’s channel operators misunderstood the channel’s concept and what was appropriate content for children.

He said the NBTC will organise a workshop for TV operators and content specialists to help them design appropriate content for children.

However these channel operators reasoned that it was too early to evaluate their programmes as they were still in the initial stage and needed time to create good content.

Channel 3 acquired a children’s channel licence because it wanted to give back to society, while MCOT is prominent in creating children’s content during the weekend morning time slot.

Thai TV, operator of the Loca Channel, is a new player in children’s channels.

For Channel 5, he said the army-run channel must adjust itself by gradually increasing informative content to 70% of the total within four years.

Channel 5 has not met the NBTC’s requirement yet, Mr Sombat said.

One year after the licence was awarded, its informative content remains lower than 70%, at 40%, while variety shows continue to account for most content, he said.

A joint committee would be set up soon with representatives from Channel 5, NBTC and academics to help oversee the adjustment of Channel 5 to a real public-purpose channel for national security, he added.

All the channels need to revise content, the shows are cheap , have sub- standard actors , directors . even continuity is awful , axe all the soaps and begin to present something of value , not short quick reality rubbish and can we cut that weekend trash.

I can just see the additional/revised content for children already...that is, more shows oriented towards nationalism....the Thai universe.

My kids always watch Boomerang, they have great shows but everything is dubbed into Thai, even the Songs!

Please play some of these shows in English with Thai subtitles, Thrust me these kids pick it up faster than you could imagine.

Thats how I learned English in the Netherlands.

One book entitled, without a trace of irony, "I love Democracy" illustrates Value 7, "Understanding, learning the true essence of democratic ideals with His Majesty the King as the Head of State" (*) with children running towards soldiers in a sandbag bunker to give them flowers.

(*) yes I did have to look them up. I haven't quite got to the stage where I can recite them verbatim but maybe the song will help me,
