ED language visa to ED university visa

Featured Replies

Hi.... at the moment I'm on Non ED visa. I went to Lao a month ago and got a non ED visa, which expires on the 30th of December (I had to go out of Thailand because of the new laws and policies). I'm currently studying in one of the universities in Bangkok. I will receive the papers for a new student visa from my university by the end of this month and I would like to convert my present non ED (language) to the new non ED (university) without leaving the country. I don't want to continue with the language school because I would have to pay for the whole new year. Before I got the new visa I had 3 months left to finish the year (not the first year with the language school) that I have already paid for. The school was nice and gave me a new visa just for me to finish the whole year. I hear stories that I can convert my visa at the immigration office 21 days before my visa expires and some say that 15 days is enough. Another stories tell me that I have to leave the country and get a non tourist visa. I don't really want to leave the country and would prefer to do it in Bangkok. What papers do I need to present to the officers and when.

Thank you for your help and sorry for such a horrible text.

Currently you are not on an extension of stay yet. When the time is there to apply for an extension you apply for a new extension of stay with all the documents immigration requires. The university knows which documents to give you and with them you don't go abroad but simply to immigration in bangkok. You can do this at the end of this month when you get the papers from the university. Make sure the university knows it is for a new extension of stay, not to apply for a new visa.

From what I understood the university will give me the papers for a new visa which will be valid for three months and after that i will get papers for one year visa. I have told them that I'm on a new student visa. After each conversation on this subject I'm more confused.

Perhaps you need to show them your visa. It seems there is s misunderstanding.

You are changing from a private school to an university. Because of this they think you will have to start all over again, getting a new visa. Even if that is not in the written regulations, in practice immigration may enforce it this way. You can try insisting to try getting the yearly extension in the last 30 days of you allowed stay, but if refused you will need to go get the new ED visa anyway.

I don't recall seeing any visa being annotated for the entity that provided the documentation that allowed it's issuance.

A ED visa is a ED visa it does not matter who provided the documentation for it.

Totally agree, hopefully the university and immigration will see it the same way, and the OP will report how his case will be handled.

I heard that as well that uni students on ED visas don't need to go out of the country every year. A bit of a double standard considering it's exactly the same visa, the ED visa....
