Just curious -

In today's The Nation newspaper is a short story about the border apprehension of Pirate Bay co-founder Fredrik Neij. The story reports that Neij and his wife from Laos had resided in Laos for the past year but were regular visitors to Thailand; they were stopped while trying to enter Thailand again. The story then contains this quote:

Neij is now in immigration custody pending handover to Swedish police and his residence visa has been revoked.

So, what is a 'residence visa' and, if this guy is a Swede living in Laos, how did he get the visa? Or is this just poor reporting by The Nation?

It's a bad translation from what a police officer said in Thai and should have been "permission to stay"
