Has it occurred to some/any that the police actually know her identity, or that she was a dancer from other items in the bag? Police don't aleays give out all or accurate information so that when a suspect reveals detail that only a perpetrator could know, they have their man.

I have no experience with the RTP, and they may not be the greatest force on the planet, but to incessantly bash them, without knowing ALL information, seems more than a little silly, even infantile, to me.

There's all sorts of things we don't and never will know about Thai culture. There was probably some kind of marking on the jewelry that implied membership in one of the nightlife subcultures. Sometimes the reporting is at fault too, as they only have so many lines to work with.

I am a big fan of your posts; however, I would disagree that the level of hatred is justified. This thread is a perfect example--its just full of bashers.

I have never had issues with the RTP personally but then I don't break laws and I don't do drugs. I suppose if I was the type to drive drunk I might feel differently--those types of guys like to blame everyone but themselves.

My argument is not that the RTP are good people. My argument is that they are good at their job--its just that Westerners don't realize what their job is and think the role of Thai cop is the same as the role of First World cop.

The cops are not idiots--they are very effective at knowing what is going on and who the players are. This can be seen by how quickly they identify and apprehend suspects and get confessions.

Do I want to have any dealings with the RTP? No. Do I trust the RTP to do the right thing? No.

Do I think the RTP would screw me over in a heartbeat? I think they would screw me over faster than that.

All I try to point out is they are very effective at their job.

One of the things that many of the BIB bashers fail to understand is that the BIB are small operators. They are the enforcement and collection division of a systemically corrupt system. The RTP do not get to keep the majority of the money they collect. It gets paid up the ladder or in hip terms--they Play it Forward.

They pay to get the job and they pay to keep the job.

Basically, they are tax collectors. Thailand really does not have a tax structure like we are familiar with in the West. But the concept is the same--its just less efficient and more corrupt. The RTP are a small player in that system.

But the RTP are not fools. They keep the peace and they do that by fear and intimidation. Cops in our own countries were doing the same thing up til 50 years ago to make up for an under-developed Judicial system.

There is actually very little crime in Thailand for the amount of criminal element that is not locked up. There is definitely very little crime against farang when you consider the amount of money we have and the naive way we carry it and expose ourselves as easy pickings by spending half our day stumbling around the sidewalks half in the bag. The only reason we are not preyed on far more is because of the effectiveness of the RTP.

Its just that when I defend good police work everybody thinks I am a fan of the RTP.

Guys like mrtoad can seem to grasp complexity--they only see black/white.

Lastly, Westerners fail to grasp that the goal of law enforcement and the courts is not Justice as we think of it in the First World. The goal is more about Social Harmony and by maintaining that harmony they actually are successful at keeping the peace. Thats why they did what they did in KT. The local BIB know what happened in KT. They knew by the first morning they were walking around the bodies. How? The RTP have an excellent and huge system of snitches. Their numbers of snitches makes anything we have in the west pale in comparison. They have these snitches because thats how they know who to collect bribes from and for how much. Because of Intelligence gathering skills. You guys really need to read some of the excellent papers on this subject.

Everything that is reported here is transliterated.Therefore we need to remember that many things are lost in translation. 99% of people on this forum forget that and are ready to attack from the off! Most westerners also assume that our ways are superior to everyone else. This imperialistic mindset is rife..
