BANGKOK: -- Almost a million krathong floats were collected in Bangkok's waterways as millions turned up to float krathongs to celebrate Loy Krathong festival in the capital Thursday night.

Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra said more than 980,000 krathong floats were collected this year, up nearly 13.5% from 2013.

He said Bangkokians floated 982,064 krathongs to celebrate Loy Krathong Thursday night.

BMA workers collected 116,649 more floats waterways near public parks than last year, he said.

Last year, a total of 865,415 floats were collected in the capital. Floats with natural materials accounted for 88% last year while foam floats were about 12%.

Floats made from natural materials outnumbered foam ones this year, reflecting growing environmental concern among city dwellers, he said.

Of the total floats collected, 90.22% or 885,995 floats were made from natural materials like banana stems and 96,067 syrofoam floats.

Klong Toey district had the highest record of people floating their krathongs in waterways, followed by Lard Krabang and Khan Nayao districts. Ratchathewi district had the lowest number of celebrants.

Lumpini park is the most popular floating venue among city celebrants, the governor said.

I'm sorry...I am not a socialist bleeding heart liberal...but I could not help but think of all the Thai families who will go to bed hungry...while others are floating millions of baht down stream...something is very wrong with this picture...

You say that like it's a bad thing..

You are right. Wastage is bad as is pollution and environmental damage.

Many other "religions" also waste money and not give the "wasted money" to helping the poor and underprivileged. But, that's religion for you, look after me, first!

I wonder who scored all the loose change aboard them. Even at 20B average, that's 20 Million baht!
