You're right and it's nice not having to keep up with those who live next door (the Joneses we call them in the US).

And, thanks to our trend-setting neighbors to the north, not only can dogs, rabbits, and chickens shit where they want, people can too! I certainly do.

Fascinating. OP probably had a leading part in The Life of Grime

Most the things he mentioned, I WANT to do and it's got nothing to do with keeping up with anyone.

Don't know where you're living, but we felt compelled to keep our place cleaner than most would in farangland. Some Thai families' places were spotless, though not a reason in itself to keep ours up to scratch. Perhaps it's different on a farm/in a village... hmmm

...but I love watching people clean my cars, cut my grass, paint my house, cook for me and fix broken stuff.

Gives me more time to do...well, nothing really.

That you originally had to keep up with your neighbours...and only stopped that by escaping the country.....shows a rather weak mind to begin with.

Well nothing is free(even for handsome man), the bill will be presented in some form or another,at some unkown point, we could be witness to a new scam, do you have life insurance?

Just kidding enjoy your life, i'm just jealous

Nope, it's not free, but I have some great people that work for me. I pay them well and everyone wins.

I work all week. The last thing I want to do on the weekend is work at home.

One of the perks of living in Thailand I guess.

Don't know/care where the OP lives......around here the streets are swept a couple of times a day - the Thai neighbors keep their yards and cars very clean.....as clean as the Farang neighbors (70/30 Thai vrs mixed).....

Drove around CM moat at 10AM the morning after the final day of Sonkran - streets had been swept/cleaned overnight.....very little to fault....surrounding neighborhoods people out sweeping the roads/dirt/whatever in front of their homes......

Inlaws have a "farm" - watch where I step outside - farm animals (without diapers - real world) .....inside = OK .....

I think you will find a lot less "clean" peoples around the world than you will in LOS....go out and take some samples - then come back and sublimally tell us how bad the Thai's (bashing) are......

I call - illiterate troll/Thai basher.....

You can see the same things in ELA (east Los Angeles) - only they sit in junk cars drinking in front of the house - esssaaayyy.......but what do I know - I'm a "whetto" (white boy/farang) to them in my own country......

I believe upcountry in HillBilly land, they call it keeping up with the Somchais.

Whose front yard can have the most discarded Leo and Lao Kao bottles, whose motorcycle can make the most noise, whose back yard has the most chickens.

How many plastic bags have you burned today?

How many daughters under the age of 18 living in your house are pregnant, bonus points for a kid having three kids from two different fathers.

How much money did you waste on a kids monks piss up party, after borrowing money from the local loan shark?

How much was pissed away on a funeral for some old yai, if not at least 5 times the annual salary you have just lost face.

If you have such things as insurance and road tax for your truck (must be a D Max wouldnt want to lose face) you have lost face.

Dont want to be sending your kids to no snobby international school now would we, major loss of face.

Is your kids first language Lao or Khmen, if its pasat klang, major loss of face.

Carry on, feel free to add your own observations.

This is just a compilation of ugly stereotypes.

The root of much rural backwardness is poverty.

If things are really as bad as you describe, why don't you roll up your sleeves and try to improve things? (volunteer teach, organize a clean up program, donate to the local school, mentor neighborhood kids, talk to people about how to improve things, maybe set an example by cutting back on plastic bags when you shop?)

Hillbilly land? How many plastic bags have you burned today? Kid's monk's piss up party? Some old yai? Bonus points for having kids with different fathers?

Truly cringe-worthy comments. I'm sure with this type of attitude your Thai neighbors must treasure and respect you as much as you treasure and respect them.

PS. Are you aware of some environmentally friendly way to dispose of plastic bags in the countryside other than burning them ?

No, he's got a sense of humour which you totally missed. Dear oh dear.

The front door of my farmhouse, and what is outside.

You're right, I still don't find the humor here.

Even on second, third, and fourth reading.

I doubt any Thais would find it humorous either. That should tell you something.

Some old yai's funeral? Kid's monk's piss up party? (Real knee slappers, there)

Your earlier "spot on" reaction (post #13) sure reads more like you were applauding the post more for it's accurate depiction of village life than admiring it for its humor, but maybe I'm missing your intent here as well.

What about the point of my post? Don't you think it's preferable to try to improve things than to sit back and snicker about them?

I'm sorry if I struck you or anyone else as a humorless/overly politically correct/Thai apologist zealot/stick-in-the-mud/whatever.

Honest, I'm not.

I'm just not a big fan of humor which relies almost entirely on racial/ethnic disparagement for effect.

Can I ask you to be honest for a moment?

Is not rgs2001uk's attempt at humor on par with Polish jokes, anti-Semitic jokes, or "coon" jokes????

Where I come from, this type of humor has been seen as out-of date, politically incorrect, and not even especially funny for well over a generation.

If rgs2001uk made similar jokes about Black people he would be joking about watermelon seed spitting contests, knife fights over who got to eat the last piece of fried chicken, contests about welfare mothers competing to see who could have the most out-of-wedlock children, or shiftless Negroes tossing malt liquor bottles out the window onto the front lawn.

Perhaps there are some who would find this equally hilarious.

I'm sorry, but I don't.

Not because I don't have a sense of humor, but because I know what it's like to be on the receiving end of this type of humor.

I didn't mean to bite anyone's head off. I was just trying to get people to think about what they post a little bit more.

Actually a lot of what RGS has said isn't any different in any other countries. It's not based on ethnicity or racism, as you seem to want to take it. Ever see Little Britain? well that's a comedy of life in the UK, watch it you might laugh.

People burning shit, get knocked up, getting pissed and buying a Ford Escort, no insurance etc is no different in the UK.

This in pub for a reason, and thankfully as we are in Thailand we don't have to put up with the PC mob.

Probably just laughing at what the gene pool has produced.
