Possible Ebola patient disappears in Bangkok

anyone see the Panorama documentary on the BBC, they followed an English doctor for a month when he went to help at one of the clinics treating ebola patients - it was absolutely horrifying and extremely emotional

as for the OP - you just have to wonder what on earth is going on, I'll put it down to bad reporting for the moment, supposing his temp was up and sweating a little - there are many reasons why - he could even have been carrying drugs internally that ruptured - who knows

According to the story:

1. He arrived at Suvarnabhumi and Disease Control Authorities suspected him of being infected with Ebola.

2. Immigration allowed him to enter

3. Officers escorted him to the hotel he reserved (Mode Sathorn).

4. He refused to check in to said hotel

5. Officers released him and let him go free.

Am I missing something here???

Yeah its called stupidity

Did his 10 friends stay there as well or did they just put that hotel on the immigration form? A group arrival from Sierra Leone, possibly suspicious in and of itself. i guess they might have some legitimate purpose for a visit but ....?
The hotel is next door to Surasak BTS, so he could be anywhere, quickly.

Shouldn't the 10 friends be in quarantine until he is cleared?

In Thailand as one of the worlds most important business hubs, how could anyone at the Disease Control Authorities dare to put a 10 member high profile business delegation from an economic powerhouse like Sierra Leone in quarantine?

What's a possible Ebola outbreak in LOS (now I'm sure what the "S" stands for) compared to the chance to do business with Africa's finest?

Are the Thai officials that escorted the person in quarantine yet ?

Sharing a taxi with a possible Ebola infected person would be inviting death IMHO

One cough in an enclosed space ..

With this sort of shambolic response, it's only a matter of time before we have a full-on epidemic in Thailand.

And how are they going to respond ?

By some more amulets of course !

Now if the character was a suspected Ebola victim he should have been put into an isolation ward situation until such time as any infection would show if it was a positive matter.

Yet we see a total indifference to the reality of the situation situation and now we have the possible chance of an Ebola victim roaming around Thailand and possibly infecting others.

Ah well the Thai's state they have a cure for Ebola so one must suppose there is no need for concern is there?]

Perhaps if the Thai's could ''discover '' a cure for ineptness we all might feel a little happier.

Well, not only a chance that an ebola patient is wandering around BKK possibly infecting others, but if he is contagious and arrived with 10 others, they too by now could be showing symptoms. So in one fell swoop you have the potential for up to 11 possible transmitters wandering around a city of 12 million full of bars, massage parlors, etc. Let's hope for all our sake and that of our families that he was not infected!

I remember reading something about how Thailand is stepping up and strengthening measures to counter the spread of ebola and that it is safe, secure... blah blah blah. And the DDC releases someone without FIRST making sure he is NOT carrying/inflicted with the virus??? And then trust he will report to the department everyday? Thailand... how can you be so, so moronically stupid??? What IF he is in fact infected, and in between now and when he is discovered to be infected, has gone to places like Chatuchak market, Asiatique, Siam Paragon, Central World and... need I say more? Seriously... I am truly amazed how stupidity here knows no bounds. Amazing Thailand indeed.

<slaps forehead> ...when dealing with something so potentially serious and life threatening, why are people given a choice about whether they are detained?

Mind you, I guess the Thai's aren't so worried considering they have a cure for Ebola now. Not sure if it's actually been tested yet however or whether they just made it up.

They made it up.

Don't forget within days of the news breaking, they asked for 1 Bn baht for further development.

We all know the vast majority of the cash would have been 'absorbed' elsewhere.

We are living in a country that produces dozens of stupid schemes daily that all have a budget attached to them.

How else can they generate the flow of money to steal from?

He's got Ebola and he hasnt reported?

He's probably dead guys.

D'oh!!

Or

he never had it in the first place,

knows he has no symptoms

suspects the reason for the concern around him is his nationality............... and the hue of his skin.

Really?

Why was he singled out when he was travelling with 10 friends?

Probably because he was running a high temperature which is what they do to monitor it initially at the airports (including the US).

So chances are your attempt at the race card falls flat on its arse.

What colour people do you expect to travel from Sierra Leone?

I agree totally.

If he was running a high temperature, he should have not left the airport until his blood tests were clear. That would only take 24 hours so a minor inconvenience. Then and only then should he have been let out into the population.

If this guy does in fact have ebola symptoms, then this place is an absolute paradise for the disease to get out of control.

There are many ways to transmit it here, even just in restaurants for example. Coughing into his hand and then handing money over to the server to pay for his meal. The server then preps someone's salad. Or server picks up tissue that he has been wiping his mouth on with their bare hands and then continue to serve other people, prepare their food, hand change to others... etc.

If two US health care workers can pick it up which wearing protective equipment and personally sanitizing themselves, then just general contact is going to spread like wild-fire and that is before he walks to Cowboy or Nana.

Nothing directly to do with Ebola (but you never know) I was wondering if the contributor who knows that water does flow uphill in Thailand could help me out with the local water supply in Pattaya as the governments water supply rarely has enough pressure for long enough to fill my tank.

Probably I should address this query directly to a certain head of government who can walk on water, cure aids, etc. (or so I have been led to believe from some of these posts). So solly if I misunderstood.

Possibly the Hindus had already patented this information 5000 years ago, but it has been lost to civilization due to decadent western intervention. All that buzzing about in air chariots, carrying out plastic surgery on Elephants (damn cruel that) must take it out of you, but maybe a sliver of Sanskrit has survived? Certainly the buffboys could do with the odd juggernaut to roll over the three finger merchants if anybody knows where to find one, juggernaught that is-do you think I am a whistle blower?

Back to Ebola, dam bad show chaps, letting a black man run amok in Thailand.

whistling.gif Ebola can be detected by a blood sample to detect the Ebola virus is in the suspected person's blood.

If there is no Ebola virus, then the person is probably clear of Ebola.

It would be "nice" to know if he ever had such a test, and if a virus was detected.

If so, and the virus was not found, he probably was never infected.

If he is infected he can not spread the disease unless he starts to show symptoms.

Ebola is NOT spread like flu, it requires contact with bodily fluids from s person showing the symptoms of an affected person.

If he was affected, and he develops symptoms, they will probably show in the next week.

For his own safety, he needs to contact a doctor as soon as possible.

If he is infected, and starts to show symptoms, he chance of surviving the disease without prompt medical treatment is very slim.

Less than 50%., even with prompt medical treatment.

Hopefully, he may be reading this?

If he had the symptoms don't you think he would have been kept in quarantine?

Just taking him to a hotel and saying stay there.

Nah.

Not buying it at all.

This is more than likely a case of inaccurate reporting, I would bet he was identified at the airport as someone who has come from an ebola area, therefore the health services would keep in contact with him for 21 days to see if he actually developed symptoms. He has most likely failed to keep contact

The reporting in Thai language is identical.
