VIENTIANE, Nov 27 – Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha met his Lao counterpart Thongsing Thammavong on his two-day visit to this neighbouring country, discussing cooperation as partnership for equitable prosperity and comprehensive development of the border to build twin economic zones and regional transport links.

Gen Prayut and his wife Naraporn were welcomed by Lao Prime Minister Thongsing.

The leaders held bilateral talks, agreing to push for future economic and social cooperation.

Development of an economic zone in Mukdahan will be conducted in parallel with the Savan-Seno special economic zone in Laos.

Regarding tourism, the two countries agreed to promote Thai and Lao destinations as a joint tourist package and will promote transport links by building the fifth friendship bridge across the Mekong River, connecting Thailand’s Bueng Kan and Bolikhamxai in Laos.

The leaders witnessed the signing of three memorandums of understanding on the second-phase development of a hospital in Bokeo province, science, technology and innovation cooperation and financial assistance for road construction from Hongsa in Sainyabuli province to Xieng Muan in Luang Prabang.

Gen Prayut also met Lao President Choummaly Sayasone to discuss future cooperation.

Thailand emphasized that border demarcation will not be a problem between the countries cooperating in border development.

The Thai government leader later met Pany Yathortou, Lao National Assembly president. He praised the Lao PDR for promoting women’s role in politics and hoped the two countries will work together to strengthen women's role at national and regional levels.
