Phone app for GPS in Thailand?

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend an android app for use in the car? Just general towns and cities would be ok....don't need to find soi's

Want something hopefully that gives ongoing direction rather than just a route or a map

I use the Android app 'Waze' every day here in the UK and when I'm in Thailand. Thoroughly recomend it, text search or just scroll the map and long press to mark a destination, also has an option to display a little circle with your GPS speed. Obviously needs a data connection, but I guess you have that if you're running a smartphone, doesn't seem to use vast amounts of data. Can get a bit confused with multi level roads but I guess that's going to be the case with any SatNav/GPS!

Google maps has voice/screen navigation and works just fine for me, needs data of course.

I like Tom Tom & Sygic is the exact same system for about 40% the cost.....once purchased it's yours including downloads.....Had a Tom Tom GPS here but the battery died and could not be replaced - learned here TV about Sygic being the same - got it and use it all the time traveling.....Available world wide......

Sygic is useful, doesnt require an internet connection, turn by turn direction and a lot more. The app is Free but there is a small charge for the map depending on Country etc.

Google the name and you'll get their website for full details.

I have been using Garmin streetpilot with Thailand maps on my iPhone 4. which is also available for an Android phone

It can be set for either pedestrian or car and its taken me as far as Nong Khai from Pattaya without any problem.at all

The only time you need the internet is when there is an update and of course actually downloading the App which is both Android and IOS and because it does not use the Data from an internet connection, thereby not using the internet and not having to pay for internet time on your phone the App is in the Apple Store for about GBP20.

I occasionally use it when I am lost whilst out on my cycle to show me where I am and get me home again.

Just as a matter of info for the cyclists out there.

I also use an App called "Runtastic pro bike" which basically works like a GPS but gives me a record of where I have been through I think Google maps , how fast I travelled, how many calories I burned and a host of other facts that a keen biker would wish to know.

There is also another biker App called 'Strava' which does the same thing maybe better according to my mate Rob

Have a look at Nostra google store, google maps works well enough in Thailand

Google Maps/Earth and apps that turn it in to Turn by Turn - Free worked great for me all the way from Karbi to the Malaysian border and back -- Great!!

Sgic has at the moment a Black Friday sale on http://www.sygic.com/en/gps-navigation

Instead of 40 Euro for the SE-Asia Maps it is only 20 EUR.

The world maps are only 40 Euro instead of 100 Euro.

I use it myself in Europe and Asia and find it pretty good.

Map updates are regular and can be pre-downloaded. No need for an internet connection when you are out and about.

You can live with the free version as well.

Look in play store for navfree i dont know if it covers Thailand.
