Hong Kong protesters clash with police at government HQ

(BBC) Hong Kong pro-democracy activists have clashed with police as they tried to surround the government's headquarters.

Protesters carrying umbrellas, symbols of their movement, fought police armed with pepper spray and batons.

The protests were stepped up after police began demolishing one of several camps occupied by the activists during two months of demonstrations.

They want Hong Kong people to be allowed to choose their leaders without interference from Beijing.

The Chinese government has said it will allow universal suffrage for the region's elections in 2017 but will screen candidates in advance.

The unrest comes as China said it would not allow a UK parliamentary committee to enter Hong Kong as part of an inquiry into British relations with its former colony.

Day 64 of the Umbrella Movement continuing occupation of central Hong Kong, at the government center in the Admiralty District.

Friday evening demonstrators were reinforced by large numbers of supporters who have remained through the weekend to the present.

The new development is that the demonstrators have countered police actions to clear Mong Kok by aggressively reclaiming the areas gained by the police.

This is the clash occurring at the moment in Admiralty where after police drove out demonstrators, the protesters regrouped to surround the center and have moved against the police with the goal of regaining it. .

For breaking the law and order of Hong Kong ...the protestors should be cleared ; there is no doubt about it ...the western media can egg them on but its against the country's laws and no foreign powers while having the right of an opinion has the right to govern another country's or states sovereignty

The students have no clear deadlines and they are hindering the normal way of lives of HK people and this movement has served its purpose but sadly the students are not backing down as they believe in the glamor presented to them by the media attention

The Chinese government have shown great restraint and understanding ...I don't see any other country waiting this long ...the ferguson protests took only hours for the national guard to be called in to restore order

As for those posters who think President Xi is weak or fancies himself to be another Chairman Mao it's rather understandable when you look at some of the weak world leaders around right now.
