PHATTHALUNG, Dec 16 -- Flooding in several southern Thai provinces improved Tuesday as rains stopped and the waters began to recede.

However, local residents are advised to prepare for another round of possible flooding as the Meteorological Department has warned of more rain, high winds and waves there, especially in Surat Thani province.

Overall, floodwaters almost fully receded in Phatthalung's Sri Nakharin district and only low-lying villages in Prang Moo, Chai Buri and Phaya Khan sub-districts of the Phatthalung provincial seat and khuan Khanun's Makok Nua and Phanang Tung sub-districts remain under water.

More than 10,000 rai (some 16 square kilometers) of farmland are still submerged and 600 families remain affected.

Rescue workers continued to search for the body of electricity worker Apichai Makkhai who was washed into the Saba Yoi canal.

Flooding also eased at Surat Thani's Chaiya district market this morning. Chaiya residents, however, have been warned of possible runoff, landslides and high waves along the coast as the Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rains and strong winds and waves there through Thursday.

Meanwhile, Lamet and Thung sub-districts remain under 50-100 centimeters of water.

Floods also receded from Hat Yai's Thung Tam Sao sub-district.

Villagers and monks cleaned the Pa Cha Phan Phlap monastery after earlier runoff hit the temple. Flooding is receding in nearby farmland. (MCOT online news)
