BANGKOK, Dec 18 -- Bangkok's Metropolitan Police Bureau has ordered the city police to take no leave during the upcoming New Year celebrations, unless necessary.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Srivara Rangsipramanakul on Thursday extended the order to all divisions of the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

The order is part of the Metropolitan Police Bureau’s policy to heighten crime suppression operations to ensure public safety between December 31 this year and January 4 next year.

Gen Srivara said police at all levels must not take leave during the holiday unless necessary.

Approval of leave during the New Year period would be under the jurisdiction of the heads of each sector, he added. (MCOT online news)

"The order is part of the Metropolitan Police Bureau’s policy to heighten crime suppression operations to ensure public safety between December 31 this year and January 4 next year."

And the rest of the year?

Oh I know, during the rest of the year they're mostly on holiday. Either that or moonlighting as security guards, bouncers, debt collectors, and what not.

They may be on duty over the period stated, but nothing will change as they will still be sitting in the Police Station, or in the Air conditioned Police box stuffing up the traffic signals. How often do you really see a copper out on the street on the beat.

They will be out there sun or rain extorting all they can

on a road near you, holidays or not,a friend out on a bike

ride was stopped at a road block, they could not do him

for no helmet or license as he was on a bike, so been

very resourceful they demanded THB 200 or they would

charge him with been in possession of a YaaBaa tablet,

which the officer just happened to have in his hand.

This makes perfect sense. Let's say for example that all the wildebeests decide to

cross the Nile river over the course of a few days. Would the Nile crocodiles choose

that time period to take a holiday ? No, of course not !!

Police step up crime prevention measures in preparation for New Year

BANGKOK, 19 December 2014 (NNT) - The National Police Chief has instructed all police units to step up crime prevention measures in preparation for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Between December 25 and January 2, police forces will be dispatched to different locations to watch out for illegal activities while security checkpoints will be set up in crime-prone areas. In addition, real-time images from security cameras installed in risky areas will be linked to emergency operation units.

Police will also apply stricter inspection to entertainment venues, public areas and tourist attractions where Christmas and New Year merry-makers are expected to gather, in order to deter people from engaging in dangerous activities, such as ignition of fireworks and firing guns into the air. Immigration police will meanwhile monitor tourist arrivals more closely and step up the document verification of foreign citizens from countries under special surveillance.

People heading out of the city during the long holiday can leave their houses under police care as part of the campaign Leave Your Home to Police, running from December 20, 2014 to January 4, 2015. Police officers will be paying regular visits to the houses of all participants to ensure nothing is out of the ordinary.

Those needing police help during the holiday will be able to call the emergency hotline 191 or 1599 as usual.

Many posters, including me, have previously reported how the ' Leave Your Home To The Police ' scheme was tried and rejected in Britain in the late ' 60s !

Apart from the obvious drawback of advertising a house is unoccupied by regular police visits and the legal question of liability should the premises be broken into while supposedly under police supervision there is the minor matter of overall trust.

How many can honestly say they are confident in the BIB to look after their property unless they are the type of person who is important, influential etc enough that the police wouldn't risk crossing them in any way ?

Incidentally there are two senior police officers living in large mansions in my soi and both have private security guards on duty overnight.

If they ACTUALLY stopped and fined all the traffic offenders over those 5 days they would make enough to take the rest of the year off anyway.

If i could be a traffic cop here id be retired in 5 years..max.

PM instructs tightening of security measures during New Year’s holiday

BANGKOK, 19 Dec 2014 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday attended his first meeting with security related agencies, instructing them to tighten measures for the New Year’s holiday.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister revealed that governmental security units would step up safety measures around the New Year, especially in the southernmost region.

He said that intelligence had not yet indicated any potential threats of insurgency during the New Year, while ensuring the public that those who stir up trouble would be punished in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the National Security Council Anusit Kunakorn said that the Prime Minister had urged related agencies to join hands in dealing with changing tactics by the insurgents. He also called on them to concentrate on both internal security issues such as reconciliation and other threats like natural disasters, outbreaks of new diseases, and international crimes.

Mr. Anusit said that the Government would also, from now, place an emphasis on ensuring the maritime security, to protect Thai vessels and mitigate risks to all businesses at sea.

That is a job choice you make, postmen don't have time off during Christmas either. Plenty of jobs that go on all the time I think people who are self employed often work even more.

Its a choice you make one should take the good and the bad of a job or find an other.

You forget that most cops have the ability to retire in 5 years, but they prefer to continue their lucrative business.

Because it was winter time, the lakes had over a foot of ice and the snow was 3 foot deep I basically had xmas/new yrs. off. And I got the hell out of Dodge. The other holidays, 16 hrs. a day. It was my job and I knew it when it took it. 24/7 365 always a phone call or radio call and I was on the road or lake, time off, day off or not. Cops don't get days off on holidays but they sure can get grumpy....lol. When I was Senior Cpl. of the Guard, Camp Hansen, Okinawa I had the duty, USMC b-day, all day, all night. While making the rounds I saw the chick I had been with headed into the NCO club in her finest kimono, I was not a happy camper the rest of the night...lol. That's life. Cops shouldn't expect too much time off, it's not in the job description. Oh, sorry, I forgot, TiT, This is Thailand, time to make a bit extra for the mia noi.
