NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 19 December 2014 (NNT) – The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources has launched the coastal conservation event aiming to sustainably preserve the mangrove forest and coastal resources in the southern region of Thailand.

The Permanent-Secretary of Natural Resources and Environment Mingkwan Wichayarangsarit today presided over the opening ceremony of the ‘Preserve the Shore and Ocean: creating the power for sustainable and mutual participation’ project at the Banpakpaya school, Muang district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

The event was held by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) along with the public sectors and local communities as tribute to His Majesty the King’s contribution to natural resources and to promote sustainable conservation with participation from the general public.

According to the DMCR Director-General Chonlatid Suraswadi, mangrove areas in Thailand continued to decrease from 2.9 million rais to only 1.52 rais. In the Nakhon Si Thammarat province alone, the about 60,000 rais of mangrove areas has been violated due to farming or construction.

He said that this event will showcase the readiness of the government agencies' ability to take His Majesty’s initiative on natural resources conservation into practicality and will demonstrate the participation from the public to help protect and benefits sustainably from the coastal resources.

The Permanent-Secretary of Natural Resources and Environment said that the government has a policy to promote the conservation of natural resources and to find a balance between the consumption and conservation of the natural resources.

Activities for the ‘Preserve the Shore and Ocean: create the power for sustainable mutual participation’ project includes a tribute exhibition for Their Majesties and booths displaying local products and folk wisdom in Nakhon Si Thammarat, as well as the seminar on the conservation subjects.

Key activities for this project are the planting of 88,888 mangrove trees in the 888 rai mangrove forest, the cleaning project for beaches and the ocean, and the release of rare marine animals in the effort to recover the coastal ecology.
