U.S. representative urges Thailand to expedite issuance of job broker laws

BANGKOK, 22 December 2014 (NNT) - The U.S. representative working on human trafficking suppression advised Thailand to expedite the enactment of more effective laws related to employment recruitment and job broker control.

The advice came when Deputy Permanent Secretary for Labour Arrug Phrommanee joined other government representatives in a discussion with Miss Jennifer K. Hong, the U.S. Department of State officer working on the 2014-2015 report on monitoring and combating trafficking in persons.

According to Mr. Arrug Phrommanee, the proposed laws would help protect Thai workers as well as migrant workers from neighboring countries from falling victim to human trafficking. Miss Hong also called on Thailand to issue ministerial regulations to protect workers in the marine fishery and agricultural sectors and to expand the number of labour coordinating centres to cover 22 provinces. Miss Hong reportedly commended Thailand’s efforts for establishing such a centre in seven pilot provinces.

She also agreed with Thailand in registering alien workers and setting up coordination centres for overseas job placements in various parts of the country. Thailand has also established a hotline staffed by translators to receive complaints from migrant workers.

The Thai official went on to say that the ministry will coordinate with agencies concerned in putting the suggestions into concrete action. Results of the operation will be put into a report to be submitted to the U.S. in March 2015.

Wrong! A fair comment, I believe. What about the U.S.A.'s treatment of illegal Mexican and Central American farm workers. Not much different as far as I can see. This is all about human rights and not just one 'pot' (the U.S.A.) calling the 'kettle' (any other countries it cares to name) black.

Well at least you didn't spin the story into a negative comment about the current government.

Ah, you mean the "government" which main priorities are weddingplanning and new year discounts at 7-Eleven??

Sorry!!wai2.gif I couldn't resist.

Spin? More like a very minor twist to accuse the junta of doing nothing, for no reasons, for no purpose other than PR. The fisheries industry here is still a slave trade. Point blank and point of fact.

At least you didn't spin the story into a false positive comment about the junta (calling them the current "government" is careful and pretentious).

Government? As far as I know it's a military junta, we (democrats, western, developed people) tend not to call that a government. But then again, > 7.000 posts, must be a day-filling job giving comments like this...

The US influence in Thailand is slipping by the day as Prayuth sells Thailand to China. Prayuths love of this communist government is worrying not only for Thais bit for all Asean community member countries. In WW2 Thailand sold out to the Japs now its the Chinese. The end is nigh!

Ms. Hong should put on a rubber suit and boots and go down to the fisheries warehouses and canning companies, ports, and watch how Thais do business for a few weeks. Then write her report.

Glad to see you care so deeply about your fellow man..... If the Thai government wants to enjoy a certain trade status with the US, then they have to jump through the hoops to make that happen. Same with the UK or the EU or any trading block.

It is actually illegal to use undocumented aliens in the US, and while some businesses and individuals do use the services of undocumented aliens, they risk fines and in extreme cases, jail for doing so. Oh, and didn't your mother ever tell you that two wrongs don't make a right?

The Australian government reserach organization the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organizationdid did not invent the concept of wireless LAN, it just invented the best way of doing it and found in all wireless routers in the world. And good enough to protect its patent in US courts.

The U.S. Department of State is now working on the 2014-2015 report on monitoring and combating trafficking in persons which is to be released in March 2015. It would seem that it's too late for Thailand to produce any meaningful and cradible legislation to get the US to remove it from Tier 3. And given the present military control of the government with no elections anticipated until 2016, there's not much incentive for the US to remove Thailand from Tier 3. Looks like a good time for China to buy some Thai seafood.

Who am I to tell anyone, US or otherwise, to get their own house in order or to question the validity of their efforts when I know so little.

Often, without outside prodding, no housekeeper gets their house into any degree of order. Some, left to their own devices, continue to breed corruption and a filthy house.

Volunteers for housekeeping are needed. Apply if qualified.

Work in America and see the difference between reading snippets in the news and witnessing first hand migrant worker injustice and the consequences the employer faces if caught.

It's not a perfect system, but significant improvements have been made to improve the plight of migrant workers.

There are numerous advocacy groups to speak up and protect illegal, undocumented aliens that enter the USA illegally. I don't know if the same applies to Thailand.

The distance ones can see, is often determined by how close the newspaper or television is from their face and the inclination not to dig deeper into the subject at hand.
