  • Britain gave £1 billion of aid to countries run by the most corrupt regimes
  • Study revealed all but one of 20 most corrupt countries receive aid from UK
  • Aid to worst offenders rose by almost a quarter in 2013 compared to 2012
  • Beneficiaries include Somalia, Sudan and even Kim Jong-un's North Korea
Britain poured more than £1 billion of aid into countries run by the world’s most corrupt regimes in 2013 – despite warnings that much of it will go to waste.
A study by the respected anti-corruption organisation Transparency International reveals that all but one of the 20 most corrupt countries receive aid from Britain.
And figures reveal that British aid to these worst offenders rose by almost a quarter in 2013 compared to 2012 as ministers and officials raced to distribute cash in time to hit the Government’s controversial aid target.

UK 'must do more' to tackle aid corruption

The UK government is not doing enough to tackle "petty corruption" in countries to which it gives aid, a report by a scrutiny body says.
The Department for International Development "has little understanding of what is and is not working" in its anti-corruption efforts, according to the report.
Dfid says it had plans to tackle corruption in each country it funds.

Is anybody else wondering whether officials of the UK Department for International Development (DfID) are getting kickbacks from some countries receiving the aid?

Nothing would surprise.

Come on team! I've got to do the tax return this weekend and I want to feel extremely bad doing it.

They could send some of the immigrants back and then they wouldn't have to move to Texas. I am afraid some of them wouldn't like the gun laws in Texas.

Just use a good chunk of that money to give the returnees a nice life when they resettle.

Why wouldn't they like the gun laws in Texas? Texas doesn't allow open carry so people have to be vetted, get a license, and conceal. They wouldn't see anything to worry about. tongue.png

Its crazy

"Britain hands over millions of pounds in aid to China despite the Communist state boasting the second biggest economy in the world, beaten only by the US.

Official figures show Britain gave Beijing £27.4million last year (2012), enough money to pay for 1000 more nurses, according to the Daily Mail"

From the linked article in the OP:

...The revelations will raise fresh concerns about David Cameron’s drive to spend 0.7 per cent of Britain’s income on aid.

...

[Tory MP Philip Davies] said: ‘It is a colossal waste of money, which is being done to make lots of middle class worthy people feel better about themselves.’

...

If a country wants to spend 0.7% of its GDP on foreign aid, I think the government should include the money spent on asylum seekers in that budget.
