Big parties' rivalry poses reform headache

Thai at heart there hasn't been a good coup yet and this one is no different.

When you have the current unelected PM making false statements about no coup and he's not going to be PM and yet doing the complete opposite and placing his mates in power then straight away any trust was lost.

Well there isn't anything particularly inspiring in this one to believe that any serious reform is actually going to happen which will produce a system capable of not being corrupted or commandeered.

Because to achieve this, it would mean that everyone in the system accepts that they have to give something up, and accept that the system controls, commands and limits their influence by the law. All sides have to accept that the law is supreme to them, and the junta and its backers will never accept it.

So I expect a horses ass of an outcome and constitution which will continue to be open to abuse and so another coup within 5 years. Undoubtedly. And this is solely because the junta doesn't understand how to create an automatic set of checks and balances through the legal system and the ballot box. They want to retain the chance to be the decision makers and not the public through their politicians. No coups are good, but this one could have achieved something, but it will end up achieving little or nothing.

All sides of politics here in Thailand lack serious, well intentioned mature people.....

One side awaiting instructions from Thaksin, while the other is run by the elite......a crazy situation!

History has shown that Thais have rarely had a reasonably strong government or opposition, that can actually debate issues in a mature manner and arrive at genuine conclusions.

No government should be allowed to be managed by any person or persons, outside Thailand.....the Thaksin situation was absurd....and even more absurd, that this style of management was allowed to continue for the time it did.

Amnesty laws should also be abolished.

The current amnesty laws which clearly state that before an amnesty is given the person applying for the amnesty MUST have served at least 1/3 of the sentence actually IN jail and be repentant and penitent before an amnesty is considered is reasonable. That must apply to ALL persons applying. Perhaps the time period could be increased to 1/2. This would only apply to actual time served in prison , not out on bail or any other excuse such as tending to sick family buffalo or shopping trips abroad.

Under certain circumstances parliament should be allowed to grant an amnesty but on very specific grounds such as the Red Shirts who merely attended rallies but committed NO criminal acts and the same to apply to the Yellow Shirts or any other semi political group. It should NOT apply to any of the leaders or organisers at all. If this is permitted there must be a vote in the house and at least 75% must vote in favour.

Voting must be compulsory and the names of those who voted whichever way, and especially those who didn't vote must be published too.

It's the yellow dems that have to figure something out not the PTP..

The PTP are the true government elected by the people and hold an election today or in one year they will walk in.

There will be a huge payback at the next poll.

.... they will walk in....

Well let's hope that the reforms stop the distortion practiced in the red areas so that folks can listen to

the opposition.

Plus some form election commission which is tasked with monitoring speeches, political rallies and any forms of

'democracy schools' and taking fast action when speeches are untruthful etc etc.

Plus laws which state that all parties must have and state and defend through public open debate a clear manifesto

which has clear policies aimed at gaining a much better quality of life for all Thais through their own productivity.

Plus parties must provide a clear report card say every 6 months on what they have actually (done not said) which

is producing results against their stated manifesto / policies.

Plus a real level playing field where voters are well informed with unbiased information and can vote without any

form of manipulation or intimidation might just produce some different results.

Sadly all these procedures could and probably would be manipulated to ensure that the "yellow establishment" prevails over the democratic wish of the electorate.

Have you asked all the electorate how they feel? If not how you KNOW which way that they will vote?

Perhaps if the Democrats and the PTP were allowed to freely canvas anywhere in Thailand in complete safety the reuslts will not go the way that you hope or think and maybe they will.

Like me and everybody on this forum what we "KNOW, think we know" or what we say is totally irrelevant in Thailand as Thais ignore us as if we don't exist, which to voting Thai public is true.

What we believe Thailand SHOULD do is based on how we would do it or how it is done elsewhere but in reality the Thais will do it their way. I don't discuss politics very much with my wife or friends because they make up their own minds and do what THEY want to do which is right and proper for them and no different to Thais in any other country that will not allow them to vote until a period of time had passed.
