Publisher pulls atlas that omits Israel

NEW YORK (AP) — A leading publisher has pulled an atlas tailored for students in the Middle East that omits any references to Israel.

Facing international criticism, HarperCollins UK issued a statement this week apologizing for the book, published by the subsidiary Collins Bartholomew. The Anti-Defamation League said in a statement Friday that it "welcomed HarperCollins' swift apology."

The Tablet, a London-based Catholic weekly, had reported that Collins Bartholomew was citing "local preferences" for leaving out Israel from the "Collins Primary Geography Atlas For The Middle East." The book, which came out in June, was designed for English-speaking schools in the region.

Way back during the gulf war I went to buy an inflatable globe from a major Saudi stationary shop. All the globes were useless as the Saudi religious authorities had physically cut the area of Israel from the globes.

Farma, you just beat me to it!! They are still doing it today.bah.gif

I managed to find one for my son to learn with, and where Israel should be.... it says Lebanon.facepalm.gif but at least we can inflate it!

A ridiculous 'mistake' to make from a 'top' UK publisher!!! Denying the truth (facts), never helped anyone's 'education'!

It's only a matter of time until they start publishing for the Thai Ministry of Education.

Seem to be an awful lot of news stories on Israel put up in TV the past few days.

Let's face it, when things go off the boil on a forum, articles on this have the same 'reviving' effect of throwing a sack of meat to hungry dogs laugh.png

In the UK, things have gone to ridiculous extremes in the attempts to pacify and please muslims.

We should bare the truth of everything so the world knows what is really going on. Especially ISIS. Why do I have to search the internet to find out what is going on. ?.

Of course it would lead to war on the streets so we will shelve that plan for the time being.

You are so right! The likes of Cameron, Blair, Livingstone, Simon Hughes have all expressed their eagerness to see a muslim prime minister installed at Number 10. It appears that the British public will obediently toe the line.....

Oh wow, so outrageous...

"In Israeli textbooks, 76% of maps show no boundaries between Palestinian territories and Israel, and Palestinian areas are not labelled"

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/feb/04/israeli-palestinian-textbooks-borders

Must have skipped the previous bit in the linked article

Only 4% of maps in Palestinian textbooks show the green line, which separates Palestinian territory from Israel, or label the area west of it as "Israel". Almost six out of 10 maps depict no borders, and another third include the green line but make no reference to Israel.

In Israeli textbooks, 76% of maps show no boundaries between Palestinian territories and Israel, and Palestinian areas are not labelled. "Since these maps are generally presented as maps of Israel, the

Truth wins out over the pervasive bias of British media and journalism which refuses to admit that Israel is a nation entitled to recognition.

"... that Israel is a nation entitled to recognition. "

Not sure if any country is "entitled" to anything from a publisher, although someone buying the atlas may be entitled to assume it is/was accurate at the time it's published. Of course, it would be difficult for any publisher to accurately show the areas in Israel where Palestinians are fenced in, since they seem to shrink by the day.

" ...British media and journalism which refuses to admit that Israel is a nation entitled to recognition."

To be fair, the British media and Britons generally, have long refused to admit that England is not the center of the universe, so the odd disappearing country on an atlas that only covers earth is trivial by comparison.

One could of course draw parallels to the maps in Thailand which in many cases show Thailand in all its glory yet all around the borders the neighboring countries are blanked out!!

To be fair, the Thai media and Thai's generally, have long refused to admit that Thailand is not the center of the universe, so the odd disappearing country on an atlas that shows only Thailand is totally understandable by comparison.

..Thai media and journalism often refuses to admit that any other country than Thailand is a nation entitled to recognition."

Apart from the idiot company that published the silly atlas and has now withdrawn it, which other British media and journalists are you referring to?

Or is it just a stupid remark?

Your usual bunkum. I doubt many Welsh or Scots see England as the center of the universe. Still makes a change from your normal sycophantic Thai arse kissing.

Heaven forbid, a Jewish or Catholic one, or maybe Sikh or Hindu, or even Bhuddist.

Is freedom of religion something you support? Are all people who follow one particular religion terrorists and criminals?

Keep Britain for the CoE and watch those non conformists too. facepalm.gif

Where I can see the logic in your post, and to a point I have empathy with you. Unfortunately, and I speak from years of experience, Muslims, whether moderate or not, will not integrate into another society. It is in their teaching to spread Islam and dominate, something that is not so prevalent in the other religions you mention. I understand where EnglishJohn is coming from, a Muslim Prime Minister in U.K. ( unfortunately something that is a real probability), will lead to a fundamental change in the lifestyle and freedoms in U.K. We already cow-tow to their "religious sensitivities far too much.

Rant over.

It's ignorant to think that an artificial state can keep on existing. I am not anti Jewish or anti-Semitic, but sooner or later we will have to face the facts, which is that Israel in its current manifestation largely consists of stolen Palestinian land. Furthermore, it is a fallacy to think this little pimple on the face of the Earth is of any significance. We are fooling ourselves to think that Israel has any significance in the world when China, India and the rest of Asia dominate the world. We might still think it does, but in reality people and places most of the people in the West have never heard of, already dominate the global economy, and they have no consideration whatsoever with our strange obsession with a - in their mind - irrelevant, shoebox sized, barren piece of land deprived of valuable resources.

There are millions of people who are Israeli citizens, the majority are Jews. Israel matters and it is not artificial. It's as "REAL" as whatever state you are from, big or small but it is likely to be in more peril. Israeli state was created via the U.N. fully legally. It was not stolen land. Yes there are disputed borders. A lot of countries have disputed borders.

Well, according to the same UN, most of it is stolen land.

Where shall the millions of Jews go, dude, the majority were born there? You say you are not hostile to Jews, but you're not thinking this through. Carrying out your hostile thoughts towards Israel's right to exist is definitely something that would hurt Jews big time.
