NLA to step up control on members’ absenteeism

BANGKOK, 4 January 2015 (NNT) - The head of the National Legislative Assembly has pledged to put more control on absenteeism of all members although he is convinced that there has not been any impact of such issue on the legislature’s work yet.

NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said that, according to the NLA’s meeting regulations, members who have been absent from the meetings without proper reasons for too many times may be removed from office.

Mr. Pornpetch explained that such stringent regulations on the commitment of all its members are required in order to make all realise the importance of the NLA’s sessions that involve the deliberation of important draft laws, which need to be fairly debated before their enactments.

He added that exceptions are given to those members who have given advance notice about their absence from any upcoming session due to previous important engagements.

The NLA President assured that all absence requests have been thoroughly checked before each is acknowledged, while expressing belief that the absence of some NLA members will not affect the legislature’s law deliberation.
