NEC voter list sees big changes

Featured Replies

The National Election Committee has updated its voter list for the 2018 national elections, so far adding 177,805 voters and deleting 108,800, according to the NEC’s website.

But talks between the Cambodian People’s Party and the Cambodia National Rescue Party about the voter list update are ongoing, Kuoy Bunroeun of the CNRP said yesterday.

“The two parties have been discussing the new NEC list, and expect it will be finished by the end of February . . . after which the current NEC voter list will no longer be used”, Bunroeun said. “The current NEC will continue working on the list, because there is still no law governing the NEC.”

CNRP officials accused the NEC of manipulating the voter list to their detriment, and to the benefit of CPP candidates, in the 2013 national election.

Opposition party members continue to push for a requirement for voting cards, which would ensure stronger safeguards to confirm the identity of voters, Bunroeun said.

Neither Bin Chhin, a senior official in the ruling party, nor Tep Nytha, secretary general of the NEC, could be reached for comment yesterday.
