Also, that won't matter since he won't be staying a year. To your question Food / beverages ( assuming you will eat mostly thai food ) ~ 250 baht / day Rent in ubon for a small house in or near the city can range from 5k - 15k. It depends on a few factors...is it furnished? Does it have an air condition ( which I would highly recommend for the summers here ). Is the landlord fair or will he see a farang and double the rent? Take a look at www.ubonhomes.com the guy, John, who runs that website is as far as I know the only western real estate agent in ubon Electricity: I would say roughly 2-5k per month...mostly depending on if you use an air condition or not. Water: around 150 baht per month. Not sure if you need a rental car or bike...I think you can get monthly rentals beginning at 3000 ( again, not too sure about the figure, maybe somebody else can give a more accurate number ) All said and done, I would say 25k to live comfortably. Internet - say 600-800 baht a month, depending on speed. Mobile package without internet and assuming you have bought a phone 100-300 baht a month. Cooking gas if you cook yourself some food say 50 baht a month (cheap). Car insurance 500 - 2000 baht a month depending on value of car. Bike insurance if not included in rental - don't know. Newpix estimates are good except that his elec est is toppy. I pay 5k a month in the hot season but I have a family of four running aircons (reasonably modestly except 17yo daughter!) plus large swimming pool pumping 7 hours a day plus 1 rai garden auto pumped sprinklers plus house & garden sprinkler water provided by well pump plus fish pond pump/aerators 24hrs plus 3 televisions plus plus etc. I pay the electricity directly though - beware landlords who add up to 100% oncost. 'Raw' cost is about 4.5 baht a unit. I suspect most falang here pay something more like 2k. 'Female support' and family thereof - the sky's the limit . Total monthly budget 20,000 - Cheap Charlie watching costs like a hawk. So discussion about retirement extension is not helping much. Even health insurance might not be an issue? In Germany e.g. there are "add-on" insurances available for temporary stays up to 6 months. Add-on: a national health insurance is preconditon. On the other hand the cost for the add-on is fairly low. Maybe there is something similar in NZ? Its still not clear to me: single or family attached? I agree with @santisuk. 20000, 30000, 40000, 50000, 60000, 70000, 80000+ Name the amount and we tell you, what can be covered. My blind guess: a single male can live a "good" lifestyle in Ubon for 50000 Baht. From the statements of the topic starter it sounds like he would get through with even less. 10000 Baht montly rent for a 2 bedroom house: can be found. He does not drink but eats pretty much farang food. I know guys living on $800 a month and I know guys living on $10,000 a month. A tourist visa (or non-O if qualifying by marriage or age) would be more appropriate. Health insurance is clearly not irrelevant for that length of stay. Many home country travel insurance providers will not cover a trip abroad that is more than one or two months. OP - it is well worth searching for one that will (at least covering your repatriation costs for the duration of your stay in the event of a serious accident/health issue). I understand that old cranky guys can afford cheap beer and while drunk do not miss a good meal or companionship. BUT, the normal people, usually sober, wash undies daily, and can type without using the word "mate" or "whilst," want a nice comfortable life. That costs about 50,000 to 70,000 THB/mo.... I put the commas in to help you get REAL. You will want the "extra cost" items like....... satellite tv high speed dependable Internet and phone line or fiber to carry it. UPS and line conditioner on ur computer. Regular renewal of visa stuff and trips to renew. Imported food and a real meal at times. Car, driver, or taxi........ whadda mean, going by motorbike???? etc etc And that does not account for flying back to see the kids, paying the inevitable fines, and coping with no health insurance... yes, try the pre existing conditions list, hee hee. Now hang on mate, while (wanted to put whilst but it was far too easy) I might not be able to type without using the word mate it might better if you kept your petty prejudices to yourself. I am neither old, nor cranky, nor a drunk I love a good meal and am married with 2 beautiful children, been living here since I was 25 and get paid stupid amounts of money and 6 months a year paid leave thanks to my work in offshore construction. Even though I use mate frequently at least I understood the OP's post. He is coming here for a few months to live on the cheap not like a bum and was asking a reasonable question. So no maybe he won't "want" sat TV, or hi speed internet (could go to an internet cafe) or UPS and a line conditioner on his computer (could get a good wi-fi package on his phone) says he is quite happy to eat mostly Thai food, "wadda mean going by motorbike"? last time I looked it is the main form of travel in Thailand and if not travelling great distances frequently is a more than adequate (and cheap) mode of getting around. I also imagine he wouldn't be flying home until after his 6 month stay is up. Looking at your spelling (fiber? ur? whadda?) One room apartments here with furnishings are available for B4,000, 4 meters wide, 2 meters long. I don't know about pots and pans and tableware, etc. Maybe some TV members in Ubon can tell you. Ubon is certainly much larger than our town so has much more to do and see. Thais eat for B100-150 a day except when they don't.... We used to budget $25 a day ($10 food/$15 room) for visiting teams double occupancy, $40 single occupancy. Add transportation. Reduce to the extent you can get monthly rentals with furniture, and to the extent you can cook. Setting up real housekeeping is expensive. I don't know why this OP is getting the rational thought when so many other posters who ask similar "how high is up" questions got specific answers. Some will say you can live on B6k/mo; others will say it takes B60k/mo; still others will say B600k/mo.
