BANGKOK, 14 January 2015 (NNT) - Labor Minister Gen Surasak Karnjanarat has vowed to tighten policies related to safety at work in order to promote a healthy work force and keep occupational workplace accidents to a minimum.

His pledge was made today while he was making a special statement on “Driving Policy for a Safer Workplace” to over 3,000 entrepreneurs at SD Avenue Hotel in Bangkok.

He said that the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare will take an proactive role in providing knowledge and understanding on the importance of occupational safety. An essential awareness should be raised among personnel at all levels ranging from the commited work force to the business owners.

Moreover, personnel will be taken to visit industrial rehabilitation centers so that they can see what physical loss and damage they might suffer if they fail to wear their personal protective equipment while working, he emphasized.

He suspected that many believed that protective equipment was provided just for showing inspectors that they have a high standard of safety in the workplace. Therefore such attitudes towards safety must be changed, along with the stricter enforcement of related laws.

He added that he has already signed a proposal to set up a Safety Department; however, consideration of the proposal will take time before it can be officially launched.

The initiative to enhance safety at work is part of the ministry’s policy to make 2015 the Safety Year, in order to pay tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for her great contribution to, and care for worker welfare in Thailand.

Does that mean they'll be erecting bamboo scaffolding 30 floors high on construction sites tied together with certified lengths of plastic waste......as opposed to uncertified lengths of plastic waste?

As was proved in the Hong Kong construction industry bamboo scaffold proved more durable than the equivalent steel scaffold under certain conditions

Vow to do this, set up a committee to do that. There is a big difference between talk the talk & walk the walk. Coming from the oilfield industry where safety was virtually non existent when I started to becoming very important when I finished but that was only because the premiums charged by the insurance companies were getting too high. It is not as if the oil companies actually gave a toss.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has a huge amount of personal and social credit with Thais (and many foriegners). She is indeed the direct and dearly close ancestor of the Queen Grandmother in heart as well as bloodline.

Since they invoked her name, they have assumed a position of responsibility that is much more serious than the average campaign promise or feel-good intiative.

Letting her down would be like slapping the Buddha in the face.

They better tread lightly here with empty promises, and follow through with intiiatives. Her Royal Highness has 70 million people behind her.

That is quite a credential, and well-earned (read her history, those of you who are Thai bashers). It is quite a remarkable and admirable history of public service, compassion, generosity, and genuine love.

That is also nothing to be trifled with. By any sense imaginable, she is noble in birth and deed.wai.gif

Not only the scaffolding is put together with the plastic or what ever, but

did you ever saw floors on it?

No they just hang in and stand on the poles to do what ever work is to do.

All without a safety belt, no wining just do as you told.

Safety? What is that?

I really admire them working in those positions, they dont know better.

Here in Europe you get fired standing on an iron pipe only 30 cm high !!

It looks like these operators are using Atlas Copco machinery on what appear to be engine blocks. Surely the use of compressed air in an industrial environment would require the use of eye & hearing protection as the previous poster has pointed out?

Perhaps someone with a better understanding of the plant might enlarge.

'Safety at Work'!

<script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

another step in the right direction...

hope it is not just another reason to gather some bahts in brown envelopes. (work) safety is long overdue...

They are slowly coming up to speed, once they find out how much industrial accidents cost the nation they will increase reforms , as we all know education standards don't help, because of this the Asian allowance is pretty much the norm throughout Asia, except Singapore.biggrin.png
