A province (changwat) is subdivided into districts (Amphoe) and minor districts (King amphoe). The districts are further subdivided into communes (tambon) and villages.

Erm, why? :D

I have seen the question what is a ? etc hopefully this is a simple explanation for those that don't know and do not like to ask in case they are harrassed for asking a simple question. :o

Most of the postal addresses seem to use street, then T (tambon) such as T. Changpuak, then A (amphur) such as A. Muang, and then province. I'm not familiar with King amphoe.

The obvious answer to "why" is sub-divisions, just as western countries have, for example, state/province, county/parish, township, etc.
