30 day visa and visa run

Featured Replies

Hi I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I want up to date info. I'm returning to Thailand with my Thai gf from New Zealand very soon. Usually I just come for 30 days as I get a 30 day visa automatically at the border. Can I do a visa run when the first 30 days has expired or do I need to apply for a tourist visa? If I can do a visa run are there preferred places to exit and re-enter?

Thanks

You can now apply for a 30 day extension for a visa exempt entry (not a visa) you get when entering the country at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

No need for a border run to get a 15 day entry if from NZ or a fly out and back for 30 days.

Ubonjoe, does this apply to all nationalities? I thought I read for us Americans it is just 7 days extension if I go to Chaeng Wattana. I would like another 30 days even though I will only need about 20 of them at the most. I assumed my only other option was a quick flight to KL or such.

Thanks

It applies to all nationalities that get a visa exempt entry.

I don't know where you read that a US passport holder would not get one.

UJ, thanks for the quick reply!

I read it here, on US Embassy site (I think) but maybe the info is wrong or I am interpreting incorrectly, but it sounded like I could only get an additional 7 days.

I will go to CW next week and get another 30 days instead of flying, that would be great. Due to work I am usually not here more than 30 days at one time so has never been an issue for me.

whistling.gif Since August 2014 it has been possible to get a 2nd visa exempt entry at immigration for the 1900 fee.

To be technically correct, there is no 30 day visa.

Technically it is a 30 day visa exempt entry allowed to certain countries, of which the U.S.A. is one.

As I said, it is now possible, since August 2014 to extend that visa exempt entry with a 2nd 30 day visa exempt entry for a 1900 baht fee at immigration.

But, be careful. This is a new procedure, and some local immigration offices may not be familiar with it. They may tell you that you have to go to Bangkok to do it.

It is out of date. The 30 day extensions started less than 5 months ago so I guess they have not had time to update it.

If it will make you feel better this immigration announcement confirms it. http://bangkok.immigration.go.th/popup_anounce.html

To be technically correct, you're not getting a 2nd visa exempt entry at immigrations. You're getting a 30 day extension of stay (which is neither a visa nor a visa exempt entry ... since there's nothing to enter if you're already in Thailand).
