I am a Canadian,in 2014 while in Thailand I started to buy a house while I was on vacation. I had a tourist visa at the time. I am now going to return to Thailand in February for the long term. My friend and I are planning to open a business. What visa would I need to apply for ? Can I do this after arriving on a tourist visa again ? Thank you for your advice.

In short, to only own a business (you can only own up to 49%), you don't need any visa. To work on it you need a work permit, and 4 Thai employees for each foreigner. The you would need to apply non-imm B visa at a consulate.

There are many, many threads that discusss this, if you use the search function you will find them.

If you are over 50 what most people do is to obtained an extension of stay at immigration. Need Bt 800,000 deposited in a Thai bank for two months.

Guess your friend is Thai national and it will be her/his business/house?

I assume you informed yourself about the very restricted possibilities to own any land/property in your name?

You should get a tourist visa. You can set up the company and etc on it and then apply for a work permit and then go out and get a non-b visa.
