Taiwan 'hero' pilot found clutching joystick of crashed plane

TAIPEI (AFP) - The pilot of the crashed TransAsia plane was still clutching the joystick when his body was found in the cockpit, after he battled to avoid populated areas, reports said Friday as the airline faced sanctions over its second fatal accident.

Bangkok to have new quality park and bike lane by the river

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok will have a new 1.2 kilometre long riverside recreational park for jogging, biking, and other activities if the Bangkok Metropolitan Adminstration (BMA) endorses the Yannawa Riverfront project proposed by the Urban Design and Development Centre (UDDC) of Chulalongkorn University.

BANGKOK: -- A growing number of European travel agencies have decided to exclude elephant rides from their package tour itineraries based on reports of widespread animal abuse. But one of Thailand’s leading campaigners for elephant welfare argued that such move could do more harm than good to thousands of domesticated elephants already in the tourism industry.

Australian prime minister faces challenge to leadership

PHUKET: -- Marine life including 10,000 wing shells, 3,000 barramundi and 150 kilograms of black crab were released into the sea at Pa Khlok Bay Wednesday (February 4) as part of an activity aimed at preserving the coastal ecology of the area.

Transport Ministry allows private buses in Bangkok to raise fare by one baht

BANGKOK: -- The Transport Ministry Friday agreed to let operators of private buses in Bangkok to raise the bus fare for non-air-conditioned buses by Bt1, Phattarawadee Klomcharoon, chairwoman of the private bus operators association said.


She said the ministry also agreed to allow air-conditioned buses to raise the fare by Bt1 per each distance. The raises will take effect on February 10.

BMA to distribute 3.5 million condoms ahead of Valentine's Day

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is distributing 3.57 million condoms at its 68 health clinics around the capital ahead of the Valentine's Day, BMA deputy city clerk Pirapong Saichua said Friday.


Pirapong said it is expected that teenagers may have their fist-time sex on Valentine's Day so the BMA would like them to use condoms to protect against HIV.

A Nok Air flight cancelled in Lampang as the plane door fails to close

LAMPANG: -- A Nok Air flight which was scheduled to leave Lampang for Bangkok before noon today was cancelled after one of the back doors could not be closed properly.

It was reported that the pilot and ground staff of the airline tried to close the door but without success hence forcing the pilot to cancel the flight and to ask all the passengers to disembark the plane.

Some of the passengers chose to make the trip to Bangkok in two airconditioned vans while the rest waited at Lampang airport for the next flight.

Mr Ruangyuth Nittayanont, director of Lampang airport, the incident was the first experienced by the airline since it started the service in Lampang four months ago.

Commercial banks reserve more banknotes for Chinese New Year

BANGKOK, 6 February 2015 (NNT) - Commercial banks have reserved banknotes for the Chinese New Year festival this month. They ensured customers, especially those of Chinese descent, that there would be no shortage of cash for their spending during the period.


Bangkok Bank, a major commercial bank in Thailand, has reported that the bank had prepared 35 billion baht in cash for its customers through more than 1,200 large and micro branches as well as 9,000 ATMs nationwide. The bank has also prepared new banknotes for their customers to be used as money in “red envelope.”

Meanwhile, Bank of Ayudhaya has reported that it had prepared 20.3 billion baht in cash for the Chinese New Year festival this year, increasing from the same period in 2014 by 8.5%. 15.9 billion baht of which is expected to be withdrawn through ATMs and the rest through 617 Bank of Ayudhaya branches. There are more than 5,162 ATMs of the bank across the country.

Both TransAsia plane engines lost power before Taiwan crash

Ruangkrai taken away by military officers for attitude adjustment

BANGKOK: -- Outspoken Ruangkrai Leekijwattana, a member of the Pheu Thai Party's legal team, has been taken away by military officers for attitude adjustment, a Pheu Thai source said Friday.


Ruangkrai was taken by troops Tuesday night after he sent a letter to US Embassy Charge D'affaires Patrick Murphy, accusing that former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra was impeached because of political conflicts.

The source said about three or four vans arrived at Ruangkrai's house Tuesday night and he was taken away and has not been accounted since then.

NLA votes to pass amended Forest Plantation Act

BANGKOK, 5 February 2015 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly has voted to pass the amended Forest Plantation Act, which is hoped to help encourage people to grow more forests.

The NLA meeting on Thursday deliberated the draft amendment to the Forest Plantation Act, which has already been reviewed by the special committee in charge.

According to Gen. Danai Meechoowate, the special committee chairman, the amendment is intended to update the existing law by imposing limitations on types of land that can be registered as a forest plantation and the clause demanding constant care for certain types of trees, for instance.

The special committee also agreed to remove rubber tree from the list of the plants governed by the amended law, he added.

Seven major retailers agree to cheap dishes at food courts

BANGKOK: -- Seven modern trade operators have responded to a Commerce Ministry request by providing 10 cheap fast-food dishes at their food courts nationwide, starting this month and running until June, to help lower the cost of living.

In response to many complaints about high food prices, Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya Friday met with the modern traders to ask them to help cash-strapped consumers.

Central Group, The Mall, Tops, MBK, Makro, Tesco Lotus and Big C agreed to provide the 10 cheap dishes.
