Many Thai nurses suffer from stress

It happens that I know of a Thai nurse that works in a government hospital in Issan.

She is 41 years old and she has been working from the age of 20.

The last 10 years she has been working as an Emergency room nurse.

She usually works for 56 hours a week, sometimes more, on 8 hour shifts and that includes the night shift from 12 midnight to 8 in the morning about 3 times a week.

That does not include when she is on call and that means than she can be called at any time to accompany a patient to Khon Kaen hospital with the ambulance.

Sleeping for her consists of about 5 hours a day.

On top of that she has to care for her husband, a demanding awkward farang.

Her basic salary is 30,000 Baht a month, before tax, plus overtime.

When this nurse go home she is totally exhausted after working all these hours and having to deal with uneducated people demanding for her services because as they usually state it's them paying for her and she has to serve them and attend to their headache immediately, doesn't matter if at the moment she is sewing the wounds of another patient that has been on an accident.

I have heard many times the doctors asking her opinion on diagnosis of certain patients conditions as she's got a vast experience.

That's a little I know about that nurse, that happens to be my wife.

you are so poor that you cannot support her without her working 56 hours a week? she could work in a private hospital which is FAR less stressful if she has to work at all! a demanding, awkward farang i do believe! sleeping 5 hours a day? wow look to yourself costas

I have the highest respect for all medical- and care- staff, all over the world!

They work hard, are mostly grossly underpaid...you name it.

Bad apples here and there.

Having said that, mark my words "all over the world", because I don't think they are stressed out more here, than anywhere else.

that is true but you take my point that 99% of farang on TVF would go to private hospitals? only costas's wife, I read, works in a government hospital and comes home exhausted and only get's 5 hours sleep a night (she has my genuine sympathy).

Private hospitals are far less stressful and the doctors and nurses have more time (because we pay). You would not catch me in a Thai government hospital unless I was poor AND desperate (most farangs, I suspect, are neither).

My gf is a nurse, this article seems to be pretty spot on including the sleeping pills and the stress related teeth grinding in her sleep. Not to mention crazy schedule with two 8 hour shifts in the same day with only 6 hours off between them.

You obviously know absolutely nothing, I have spent a fair bit of time in hospitals in Thailand and can tell you that nurses do indeed give injections, even emergency response ambulance staff give injections I know this as I have had injections from them.

And yes nurses are great in this country from ward nurses through registration nurses to specialist nurses such as OR and recovery nurses.

My only experience here is of my wife being at the Bangkok Hosp in Hua Hin for 4 days. Every time I walked past the nurses station there was a large group all chattering away or playing on their phones; no sign of any work being done. For a private hospital the standard of care was poor compared to private hospitals back in N.Z. They were not attentive, did not anticipate needs, had to be asked to give my wife a wash and change the sheets, had to be repeatedly asked for pain medication. I've never pressed a call button so many times...back in N.Z. I've never pressed a call button once. If those nurses are stressed it sure aint work related!

Thai nurses are terrific. Always professional and caring and certainly appear to be highly skilled. I have no experience in other asian countries but the Japanese nurses I've seen on video seem a little bit too familiar and are always taking their uniforms off.

Why do they take the uniforms off, do they provide special services?

Please provide me the link. whistling.gifgiggle.gif

According to my wife, she can get her pension after 25 years of working as a nurse.

Pension is calculated according to her last salary but she is not sure what the percentage is.

Sorry can't help you more.

More than most posters on TV, i am in a position to speak about nurses in Thailand.

As many posters know , because of a post made my my friend Costas, i had a serious accident in 2013.

Ispent 7 very long months in Khonkaen hospital, was cared for by many different nurses some good, some exellent, some down right lazy( small minority).

Posters on here who have not experienced what i have and who say some stupid comments about Thai nurses like nurses in Manchester in my book stupid useless comments comparing Thai nurse to UK nurses should SHUT UP.

I have had nurses taking care of me in KK, who are nearly dead on there feet, due to the crazy shifts they are expected to work.

Also comments made by Costas about his wifes shifts i know to be correct. I know her, Costas and his wife visited me 1 afternoon she had finished work 8am they had to leave (time 17.45) so she could catch a few hours sleep before starting work again at 00..00.

Thai nurses work harder longer than UK nurses for a pittance, UK nurse earns in 3 days what a Thai nurse earns in a month.

I'll have to find out who inserted my IV lines (painlessly) and gave me jabs throughout the night.

Looked like a nurse, talked like a nurse and even walked like a nurse in ridiculous white high heel clomping shoes.

If the person "looked like a nurse, talked like a nurse and even walked like a nurse in ridiculous white high heel clomping shoes", then it probably was a nurse. biggrin.png
