I was never a Dylan fan, although I liked some of his songs by other people. Let's face it, he can't sing worth a damn and - for the record - I would say exactly the same thing about Leonard Cohen.

I agree, but Dylan was never about singing always about lyrics.

I like Dylan on the Magic Roundabout too, one cool dude. biggrin.png

When in Georgia rented a car and the radio station was talking about him and some interviews were played...they pretty much felt he was once brilliant but is reduced to a smoked out pothead that has trouble putting 2 cognizant thoughts/sentences together...The quotes from him bore it out....I am sure he will always have icon status among some groups...My son loves him - but he's also potted all the time - a sad progression to watch over the years....

A work of art???????????? Sorry don't see it.....decent verse maybe....steps above the 3rd grade rhymes in music today - yes.....but a real stretch to be called deep or art....maybe if stoned might have substance like Wizards or SNL back in the hazy days......

Got to disagree here pgrahmm, imo there are some great tracks on Blood on the Tracks ( no pun intended) but sadly you tube won't allow any originals of Dylan to be played.

I feel a bit bad for those who, for whatever reason, just don't "get" Bob Dylan. Much like those who aren't touched by pieces of fine art or classical music, one can't really explain Dylan. You either feel it or you don't. His songs and lyrics hit me in the gut and the heart. Bob Dylan's music, along with a bazillion other great rock and roll tunes, have served as the soundtrack for my life since first grabbing me back in the early sixties. Here is a full text of his recent speech that started this thread. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-grammys-2015-transcript-of-bob-dylans-musicares-person-of-year-speech-20150207-story.html#page=5

^ Thanks for that but still not an admirer of his work....I respect him for his accomplishments and longevity....to me he's like one of those abstract personalities that NYC attracts and is so besotted with.....

If you didn't have the chance to bath naked on Washington Square fountain, or make love on Central Park grass.....never will understand what Dylan means for some people....and the proud to be just old enough to remember that.

Dylan is not relevant today. Young people don't listen to him. He is a man of his times.

Does he have any fans under 40 years of age? Not many.

whata ridiculous statement! he's relevant to many people. If people under 40 arent interested, that just means he isnt relevant to people under 40. so what?

Yes, many old people. The young don't listen to him, therefore he is irrelevant to young people.

Frankly, I think he's irrelevant today full-stop. His time was the sixties and some of the seventies. Ancient history in the music world.

that just shows how out of touch you are with the music world.

Relevance - an interesting point. He is still out there on his never ending tour, bringing in entire families of all ages. His songs and albums have adapted to technology and continue to sell consistently via iTunes. All artists, whether they are musicians, movie stars, or authors, at some point, usually as they age, struggle with being relevant. Just as you I do or will do as we get older. Such is life.

However, that does not minimize their impact. Bob Dylan is America's finest singer/songwriter ever.
