Tobacco bill opponents to issue white book

BANGKOK: -- Twelve tobacco farmers and traders associations are submitting their "white book" to the cabinet explaining why the tobacco control bill cannot prevent teenagers from smoking and why the public health policy is a failure.

Kris Phathong, who heads the Tobacco Farmers and Traders Association of Chiang Mai, said the white book would explain why the bill could not stop smoking among teenagers because it does not get into the root cause of the problem.

Instead, the bill does have wide impact on farmers, tobacco industry, and traders, he said.

The bill was prepared and drawn with no transparency but with hidden agenda, using teenagers as a shield.

Besides, the bill has contents that intervene the legislative power,he claimed.

He said all 12 organisations related to tobacco farmers, industry and trade would seek fairer consideration from the cabinet, and drop it.

But ASH Thailand also issued a statement supporting the bill saying a recent research on smoking among teenagers revealed that 70% of addicted teens would smoke throughout the rest of their lives.

It said it agreed with several harsh measures stated in the bill, which increase the minimum age of cigarette buyers from 18 to 20 years, ban the sale of packet-less cigarettes, and prohibit the display of cigarettes at shops and stores.

Maybe the tobacco farmers can switch to other crops. Rice, maybe.

The NCPO will need to build an Attitude Adjustment Convention Centre to handle all the Thai people who insist on creating conflict. But maybe it could be used to attract tourism.

Just stop the growing of tobacco..........don't produce.......it's really sounds just so simple.

However......the tobacco growing industry in Australia collapsed due to restrictions...some 20 years ago........but...there are now more young people smoking than previously........is there really a solution.....?

Quit smoking. It's easier than what they want us to believe it is.

The secret is in changing the mind setting and start to believe

that to quit smoking is actually easy. I know it works because I've done it.

Been nicotine free for 17 months and counting.

Then Thailand would have to import all it's tobacco requirements, that makes a lot of sense.

Ironically, one of the few crops where farmers are profitable in Thailand year after year is tobacco.

Thailand should probably switch some rice farmers to it.
